Subject: Backflushing...how often?

I've received mixed information on how often to backflush 'my' machine
with Puro Caff. I use a Elektra Barlume VC at the shop where I work
and I backflush the machine with water every night, but only backflush
the machine with Puro Caff once a week. What's a good balance between
keeping the machine clean and keeping it seasoned?

Backflush every night at closing time with the espresso cleaner
use only 1/4 of teaspoon per grouphead
your groupheads will be happy for many many years to come

i would add that after purocaffing every evening, whoever opens the
store in the morning should run a shot of espresso through each
grouphead that doesn't go into any drinks. just to make sure nobody
gets a purocaffe-tasting latte. at my shop, we use the espresso left in
the grinders from the previous day that we'd be throwing out anyway.

The guy we bought our Rancillio from said to use the purocafe once a week.
We found that we better backflush 2 or 3 times a day, depending on use, and
puro cafe every night. If the night person doesn't do it my morning mood is
very, very bad. This is for a small shop.

What kind of shop? If it is a machine shop with a nice espresso
machine for employee use then that sounds like reasonable maintenance.
If it is a coffee shop doing a good business, and it was my shop, I
would be backflushing about once per hour (maybe twice depending on
how busy it was) with water and once at the end of EVERY day with a
cleaner. I would worry less about "seasoning" and more about what a
breakdown due to a clogged or failed 3-way valve would cost in lost
business.
