No matter what I do, the shots from the Silvia with the PID continue to delight me. However, I have noticed one anomality when using the bottomless PF. It sprays all over the counter and the backsplash. :-( Has everyone encountered this behavior? Godzilla

I found that the pf basket just has some grounds in the screen. You can use a needle or something small enough to poke the holes clean. Simple.

I occasionally get a spritzer, but the vast majority of my shots are textbook in terms of appearance (not always in terms of taste). I think the bottomless really helped me get my dosing, distributing, tamping act together. I use a convex tamper and do the spinny ulation thing (sort of like the north, south, east, west thing, but a continuous motion for a few turns) and then a very light tamp followed by a semi-firm polish. It's gotten very consistent over the months and I almost never have a bad shot and even the ones with a small spritzer are contained enough to work well. No secrets, just practice practice practice. -Ray

My tamping ritual is as follows: I have a modified bar stool that holds the PF in place. After dosing 17.34783 grams of coffee in a LM double basket I mount the PF to the stool, place the tamper in the pf and, holding the tamper firmly, walk clockwise around the PF 4 times, then 3 times counterclockwise then 2 times clockwise then 1 time counterclockwise. I them remove the PF from the stool and do a polishing tamp while genuflecting 3 times but the polish twirls are only done on the down stroke. I then dance 4 bars of an old soft shoe, finish with a pirouette, lock and load and good to go. I get spritzes when the beans are old or the grind is off. R "no religion involved, this is science" TF

Do not give in to the dark side and use instant- that way lies madness.
