Swords into plowshares, mortar shells into boilers. The article is unclear about what kind of "coffee machine" he makes but from the picture it's pretty clear that the shells get made into the boiler of an espresso machine. I've heard from others that espresso machines are fairly common in Ethiopia (and an espresso costs a few pennies) though I had always assumed that they were imported from Italy. It's really an impressive display of 3rd world ingenuity to make your own espresso machine this way. I'm guessing he salvages bits and pieces of older machines (p'stats, pumps, group heads, elements etc. to make up his machines and that he improvises the frame, end caps for the boiler, etc. I wonder if the brass is lead free?
