I've been extremely busy the last few months with several projects and let my backflushing schedule slip "a bit." Instead of my normal detergent flush every weekend and mid-week water flush, it was more like detergent every other week and one set of plain water flushes in between. The last two or three weeks I noticed I was starting to get occasional leaks around the portafilter gasket. Well, the gasket is over a year old, and I just assumed it was hardening. So, I just tightened a little harder until I got around to buying a new gasket and screen Friday. Today I pulled the old ones off. Hmmm. The old gasket was pretty much like new. But, yuck! the showerhead and inside of the screen were caked with a thick layer of black residue. There was blockage all over the screen. Never, ever saw anything like that before. New, new year's resolution for myself. Don't backslide on backflushing! shall

Here's a better one : Do two plain water BFs after the last shot EVERY day. Takes less than 30 seconds. Over a whole year, probably less than the time you _spent_ talking to Michael and Angelo <vbg > Ian

Lever machines can't really be backflushed, but we do the pf wiggle instead, which certainly leaves the group and seals clean. -- Regards, Danny http://www.gaggia-espresso.com (a purely hobby site)

Before I got sloppy, I'd been following a home-use regimen borrowed from Chris of Chris Coffee. As for talking to Michael and Angelo, that comes under my "education and entertainment" time. shall
