See this link for the grusome story of Sultan Murad. http://www.accidentalhedonist.com/index.php/2006/03/24/food_stories_the_sultan_s_coffee_prohibi In much more modern times (after WWI) the Ottoman Empire dissolved so Turkey could no longer source coffee using local currency from its former provinces in Yemen, etc. In order to conserve foreign exchange, the drinking of tea (which could be grown domestically in Turkey along the Black Sea Coast) was encouraged (or maybe it just became popular because it was much cheaper than coffee - I don't know the details, but even today domestic tea in Turkey is very cheap). So today Turks drink more tea than the famous "Turkish coffee".
