Subject: Silvia - motor pump is making big noise
Hi everybody,

I got a brand new rocky - stainless housing is a bit bent during
transportation :(
- and a used silvia yesterday.

I QUICKLY learned that this USED silvia is making uncomfortable motor sound
with vibration.
In addition, output from portafilter is not hot enough.

I have looked into the case and I found no strange thing inside- pollution
and/or stains.

What do you guess is the problem? Does it normally make this uncomfortable
sound + vibration?

Thanks,
Kevin

* Please don't tell me to return it. :(
Shipping cost is too much.

Problem is that, I am not living in HK.
That is why I am asking your advise.

No Rancilio dealers in Korea?

I wish either that suppliers started double boxing these grinders or
that Rancilio placed them in a larger box with more cushioning and
protection.

Take the top off the machine and see if the sound changes.
If yes- use some 1/4" x 1/4" foam weather stripping along the ledge
upon which it sits.

If no- as Jim says, check the splash panel under the water tank. make
sure it is not rubbing against the pump and that all the screws are
tight.

If that doesn't do it then remove the back panel and check the pump
mounts. It is held up by two rubber pieces that allow the pump to
float. If these become distorted they can allow more movement which
lets the hoses beat against parts or may let the pump rest against
other parts with the same result. Use caution with the machine open
and plugged in!!!!

Have you measured it? How low is the temp? How long have you allowed
it to warm up?

Two suggestions:
-Most likely: Replace the brew thermostat (they are prone to wear).
-Descale the boiler (try Urnex Dezcal which is activated citric acid).
If the machine has suffered any abuse at the hands of hard, tap water,
then it might be scaled up. Probably not the cause, but the first (or
second) thing to do with a used machine.

Don't return it- give it to me and I will reimburse you for the
shipping cost! ;-)

Thanks Randy,

I will try it and post the result some weeks later.

No need to measure it. I can even drink the whole espresso at once
immediately after brewing. :(
So, you can imagine the situation.

I have ordered Jim's PID kit. I would monitor it after installation.
For the time being, I will warm up the coffee with steam.

Very good idea indeed. I wish to try it after I find PID does not fix it.

You will be quite pleased with the kit, its ease of installation, and
its performance and if you have been getting good steam then it will
eliminate the possibility that it is the thermostat.

If you can't find that, try a home beer/wine brewing shop for citric
acid- if not, look for "sour salt" in the Kosher section- it is citric
acid. Mixing and use directions on my website. It won't work quite as
well as the Urnex product, but it will help.

Since the machine is used and of questionable maintenance, I would
also recommend taking the 3-way apart while you are at it all and give
it a good cleaning.

It is difficult to say because microphones tend to exaggerate some
frequencies and amplitudes of some sounds differently, but generally
it sounds like the pump is laboring somewhat.

Try this: turn on the hot water switch, then open and close the hot
water valve. Does the sound change appreciably? That is, does the
harsh sound disappear when the valve is open?

Additionally, during that test, when the valve is closed take the
short hose in the water tank and hold it above the water level. Is
there a small flow of water coming out of it?

It does sound like the pump is laboring, but generally it does not
sound bad. it might be that the pressure relief valve is allowing too
high of a pressure and that could be making the pump work too hard...
Just a guess..

I add: It is possible that the previous owner took the thing apart for
some reason and reassembled the pressure relief valve incorrectly
causing an over-pressure situation, making the pump labor!

The new adjustable valve (a direct replacement part) can be had for
about $45 + S/H:

You should bring it to the dealer and listen to it next to another Silvia.

You've got crap in your solenoid valve or you need a new solenoid =
coil. See=20

CK -

Sometimes the stainless steel* splash guard below the water reservoir
comes into contact with the pump during operation.

Remove the top and the rear U-shaped panel. Then look sideways at the
machine and see if you have any clearance between the pump and the
splash panel.

You can easily bend the splash panel out a little bit to give more
clearance if this turns out to be the problem.
