Subject: Silvia - successful stats change!
I'm sitting sipping my first cappucino in awhile! I successfully
replaced both the thermostats in my 4+ yr old Silvia.
I wasn't sure which one was bad and so I replaced both of them.
I got the stats from www.espressoparts.com in WA -
I got the heat sink goop from a local electronics shop, it's called
NTE303 for fifty cents (no one has "thermal mastic" but I found a web
site that said "heat sink" stuff would work fine.)
I used instructional aid at Whole Latte Love (where I had bought my
Gaggia grinder a couple years ago).
I'm glad I have small fingers! Getting those little screws out from
under the wires was a job for small, female hands such as mine.
QUESTION to Silvia experts:
When I took out the old stats I found that unlike the new pair I got
(which were 100 deg and 140 deg) my old pair were 110 deg. and 140
deg. Will losing 10 deg on the stat cause me any problems? My morning
capp seems fine!
thanks for all the advice I got here, Ms Silvia is rolling again after
being dead and cold!

The 110 thermostat for brew temp has not been available for about 4
years or so IIRC. If rumors are true, they changed the spec because a
lot of folks were complaining of excess steam in the boiler when the
machine idled for a while.
For holding of small slotted screws, try one of these from Sears,
Here's another that works on slot and Phillips:
