I think the only reason I was able to make espresso right away was
that the stat failed while everything was hot.

This morning - Cold Cold - no hot for steaming milk AND no hot for
making espresso.

So... both stats?

I've temporarily cancelled my order for the steamer stat - I guess I
could just buy both and replace?

I'm about to go out and seek coffee to get my brain started this
morning!

Press the Red Button! (3rd thermostat on front LH side of boiler).

Change 'em both out.
ONE shipping charge and about 1 minute's more work!

Bad steam tstat will cause this as well. Everything goes through the
steam tstat, whether the steam switch is on or off. If tstat fails in
open position (like your's probably has), no power to boiler, period.

I would buy both (they're cheap), but replace steam tstat first. Think
you will find replacing steam tstat alone fixes both problems.
