Today, I was feeling extra strong (Schwarzenegger Syndrome) and
slightly overfilled the portafilter and apparently overtamped as
well. Nothing was coming out of one of the two spouts on my PID
Sylvia until shortly before I said "enough" at one full minute!
There was one ounce in one of the glasses and about a half ounce in
the other.

And it still tasted great!!!

Did you say yours is PID'? If so that would be the only reason that
what your talking about would even be drinkable. If you didn't have
any temp control and you would try for a pull that long I would expect
it to taste burnt and horrible. You must have your PF really jammed
for it to take a 40sec pull as a norm. Does it come out as a few drops
a sec. in the beginning? I would say you are putting a huge strain on
your machine if you are doing this as a routine.

2-5 minutes, and anywhere in between. There may be times when mine is
running slower or isn't putting out significant liquid volume, though
I wouldn't run it continuously (without getting a shot), and certainly
well below 2 minutes. Good to know.

Yeah, why push your luck.

maybe time to apply my 34970A to this task, and report back. I have
plenty of test subjects around here.

but then, if I have one live for 5 minutes, will someone try for 6 and

Rather like a hot dog eating contest. And BTW, the very newest
Silvias still have NO thermal protectors -- as evidenced by a recent
customer who left the pump switch on -- then the TIMER came on. he
changed the pump himself.

Hi Dave, I though I've read maybe @ Chris Coffee, HB, Ulka website, specs,
or wherever., that after approx 2 minutes the thermal overload protection
will kick in when & if the pump gets hot enough. Of course with the older
Ulka units, (my 2001 Rancilio Miss Silvia) there's no thermal protection so
it'll just keep running.., untill possible burnout. I'm NOT that dumb
though, lol! {;-D

I've been using a 40s pour because I've been liking this better than
a 20-25s pour. The longer pour is richer than the shorter one. I'm
wondering if this is indicative of a problem in my process - maybe my
water temperature is off?
