Subject: What grind should i select for a Bodum vacuum pot?
|
I bought my son a Bodum vacuum coffee pot for X-mas. His birthday is next week and i want to send him some Peete's coffee. I don't know which grind to select from Peete's options. They have percolator, press pot, and drip. Which grind would be best for his coffee maker? Happy New Year to all!

You should definitely get a grinder because you lose much (maybe all?) of the flavor advantages of the vac if you use pre-ground coffee. That said, I'll take a dissenting view on the need for an expensive grinder with the bodum. I've used one nearly every day for over 5 years and had great results with cheap burr grinders (you definitely need a burr, not a whirly blade). The bodum disk filter is fairly forgiving. I currently use a cuisinart grinder for the vac, which can be had for around $30-40, set at 2 notches finer than what they call "medium." Also the bodum takes some practice to get just right. Preheat the water; start on med-high to high until the water starts to come up at a good clip and then ratchet down to low (I usually give a good stir once the water is 1/2 up). And you'll need a wire screen if your operating it on electric to minimize the risk of cracking. Sweet ias has some decent instructions at this link: http://www.sweetias.com/santosinstructions.html All that said, if you want to buy some pre-ground for now, pick the "drip" setting at Peets. shareyourknowledge@hotmail.com wrote: > I agree with you,but i don't think my son is a serious enough coffee > drinker to fork out $90.00 for a burr grinder. I agree with you,but i don't think my son is a serious enough coffee drinker to fork out $90.00 for a burr grinder. I will pass on the advice though. Thanks for your reply. I was hesitant to say this but since Roque started it I will have to agree that the by far, bestest gift for a coffee enthusiast to take his or her enjoyment to the next level is a decent quality burr grinder. The catch is that it has to be a decent one. Capresso Infinity or Solis Maestro minimum. (Around $90) Any cheaper and the quality of grind will fall off rapidly. Vacuum pots are sensitive to grind quality and can clog up easily if there are too many fine granules present (such as results from a blade grinder or cheap burr grinder.) Better to buy him a grinder to go with his new vac pot. _______________________________________ Please Note: If you find a posting or message from me offensive, inappropriate, or disruptive, please ignore it.
