I would like to see these models but live in a relatively unpopulated
coastal area between LA and SF. Does anyone know a shop that may stock
either or both of these units?

Thanks

Hi David,

>From time to time, in this situation, I've said to a local dealer of
something "Look. I want to support local merchants, because I want the
service, I want to be able to see things before I buy, I want someone
I can develop a relationship with, and it's good for the community. I
know your costs are higher than a mail-order shop, and I'm willing to
pay a 25% premium over mail-order for the privilege. I'm not willing
to pay double." As it happens, I've never had someone turn that down,
and so far as I know, they haven't felt bad about it: I generally
become a repeat customer and steer people to the store. (Hence the
mention of Pacific Espresso in my other post.)

Best,
David

Maybe not a retailer, but there may be some AC folks in your general
area.
If none offer to let you check out their equipment (although you
probably won't see both grinders side by side) try a post on
cofeegeek.com.

Of course all you want to do is see them. Then you'll buy them from
some web seller, right?

That's why no one can afford to carry pricey specialty items on their
inventory any more. If more of us would spend a few bucks and support
local retailers, the local retailers would be able to stock these
things. Even if local means the local big city. As it stands they
cannot afford to subsidize the discount web-based merchants by serving
as their showroom.

Then, when something goes wrong, and it will, you will spend hours of
frustration and more money than you saved by trying to get something
made right. All the guarantees at places like wholelattelove are
absolutely worthless. Your local merchant, on the other hand, will
invariably take care of you when something needs attention.

So, buy it on-line. Pay your money and take your chances, but don't
expect your friendly neighborhood fool to subsidize wholelattelove
while you do it.

Ken,

I don't know. But if you're pushed and must hit a populated area, Mr
Espresso in Oakland has quite the setup. I'm sure they have Minis. They
have a beautiful showroom of ECM machines, mostly commercial, and all sorts
of grinders.

Also, they are a professional ECM repair place, which only helps you if you
need a repair. (I don't think they officially do repairs for non
customers.) The guy in charge of the showroom and repairs is Italian and
very nice.

That's the freewheeling nature of Usenet. If you don't like it . . .

Yet nowhere has my question

Your question has been answered. No, there isn't. I think Chris Coffee
Service has a showroom http://www.chriscoffee.com/vr/showroom.html but
he's in Albany, NY. Road trip?

In which case the local merchant is the surrogate showroom for some
e-bay seller. Either way it's not a sustainable business model. If
you're going to go the cheap route, there is going to be a cost. Part
of that cost is having to buy stuff without actually putting your own
hands on it.

Was a time when my local Peets (back when there were probably fewer
than a dozen Peets all told) sold a fine assortment of mid-high level
espresso machines and grinders. They came with knowledgeable sales and
service and impeccable after-sales support. That's where I bought my
first two machines including my Silvia. Those days are gone, likely
forever.

yep, especially as the margin on consumer electrics has eroded
significantly. i've pretty much given up on selling espresso
machines and send all inquires to 1st-line.com.

What -- you don't want a hundred phone calls with troubleshooting and
maintenance questions?
