Subject: burnt taste from silvia after leaving steam switch on

I inadvertently left the steam switch on my 2003 vintage Silvia on for maybe as much as 2 hours. After that, the water came out rust-brown and after flushing 4-5 tankfuls of water and one 5% vinegar solution tankful through it, it still has a burnt taste. It seems to produce steam normally even after my abuse. I have ordered a new boiler but am having a problem sourcing thermostats here in Canada - can one typically reuse the old thermostats? Any tips about boiler-ectomy and reinstallation?

It was relatively straightforward, and required only 2 trips - one to the bicycle store to get a very thin 18 mm wrench to tighten the boiler inlet/overpressure valve assembly and one to the computer store to get some thermal paste for the thermostats. I also replaced the shower screen, which hadn't been replaced since the machine was made. This made the flow out of the group head far more dispersed and even. (The old one was clogged with old coffee despite vigorous attempts to clean it.)

I stopped on the page where they had the boiler for twice the price of Espressotec in Vancouver (which doesn't have t-stats in their e-store).

I don't know what to say about all of that but I do know one thing. Flavored coffee sucks. I have a hard time respecting the opinion of a person who likes flavored coffee.

You use the existing thermostats. If you're serious about changing the boiler yourself, there are a few traps along the way, email me when you get it. -- Alan alanfrew@coffeeco.com.au www.coffeeco.com.au
