I agree with your timeline, Danny. Maybe looking through a
rose-colored rear-view mirror, but time was when the worst
transgressions were quibbles around politically incorrect speech,
annoyances about top or bottom posting, and rudeness to the occasional
newbie who couldn't Google "expresso."
In the group's favor there is a high degree of tolerance that seems to
pay off----over time. The incessently rude and inappropriate sometimes
mellow; the incomprehensible drop out; and "regulars" who contribute
steadily are given some slack for their occasional indulgences. That
said, I am not ignoring the fact that some of the regulars can be
downright provocative, and the argument is not strong that they've
earned that right and newbies haven't.
I don't know that this site has lost any of its core friendliness, but
it certainly has more baggage to carry and it's understandable how a
new poster, possibly new to being an active coffee enthusiast, might
figure, "who needs this?"
IMO, direct flaming, name-calling, insults (as might be seen in this
thread), macho tough-guy gun-talk, and so forth cross the line, and
"Leave the list if you don't like it" or "Filter me out if you have a
problem" are childish responses of playground bullies, not of valued
members of a community.
Many forums "out there" are undoubtedly worse. I am only familiar with
a couple of very professional and respectful (and helpful and friendly)
ones.

Fast forward 18 months/2 years and a few new posters have almost
succesfully killed this group by insulting regulars, those who gave
most help and advice, and arguing between themselves (the new
posters), whilst being seemingly unable to offer any meaningful
dialogue or assistance to others.
This group no longer has the friendship and ambience I so enjoyed, but
hopefully, as night follws day, some momentum will re-establish itself
and the group will flourish again. It's just a shame that so many
respected, loyal, and helpful individuals have given up posting here.

I hate to say but I have been in this wonderful group for over 10
years. It has always been a mere ebb and flow. The lurker who felt
so vulnerable and scared could have been here in earlier years when
flames erupted, only to quiet down- time and time again. We've all
paid dues. Don't get caught up in the minor issues.
This group will indeed continue as long as coffee is interesting to a
few. In 10 years, you won't remember this less than stellar stuff and
I Believe, we will all still be wanting great coffee. Don't you agree?
