Subject: Anfim vs Mini

Hi folks, I've been using a Mazzer Mini for years, and I've always been very happy with it. Last year I left my Mini back in Montreal (spent the summer there), and started to use a brand new Anfim super Lusso. I've been using the Anfim for a few months now, but there are many reasons why I prefer the Mazzer, so I was excited to have my mini back after almost a year. I bought 2lbs of Vivace Vita and pulled a few shots : "uhh ... this looks thinner than with the Anfim" Adjusted the grind ... still, after an ounce or so, my espresso is definitely thinner and more pale. So I filled the Anfim with the same beans, and sure enough I'm able to get better body and color (and taste). Damn. Should I change the burrs on my mini ? I'm not sure how many pounds went through my mini, but it's only been used at home for maybe 3 years, I'm surprised I'd have to change the burrs already. galpi

That's a great guestion, does anybody out there, whose worked with both, have any preferece for one over the other. BTW did you buy your Anfim in Montreal? If yes, where? Ideally, if the burrs are sharp, the grind quality should be clear. Clumping grinds is a sign of dull burrs as well as pours that are similar to using stale coffee. You could take the mini apart to clean it and also inspect the burrs for sharpness. About 200lbs, as far as I know, is considered the life of the flat burrs but they could have dulled sooner or are dull enough to notice a difference in grind compared to what it sounds like are the sharper burrs of your Anfim.

I suppose it's the quality of your grind that would determine burr quality in the end with estimated burr life being just a guide. I had a Rocky and I noticed after about 1/2 a year slightly uneven grinds and a bit more clumping. I just got a Macap M4 and the grind is much better; fine and fluffy. I can even feel the difference tamping it. The grind tamps down like pressing a firm pillow instead of trying to pack sand like the Rocky's felt. In the end it could be hard to say what's up. It might you're just slightly off on your grind with the Mazzer and going just a hair either way could help. I know when trying to dial of the stepless Macap the zone between choke pulls and good pulls to too fast pulls seemed like only a 1/2 turn on the wormgear which would amount to about a 1/2 step on a stepped. With the Rocky guys cleaned crud off of the burrs noticed a difference. Look forward to hearing how it goes.

I'll try that ... I'll clean the burrs, compare, then replace the burrs and compare again (I'll post the results). 200lbs only ? I thought it was more like 500lbs ... in 3 years, It's very possible I've used over 200lbs of coffee. This is interesting. It would be the first time I actually see the effects of dull burrs on my coffee. It was so obvious something was wrong right from the first shot (after dialing in). galpi > > You could try that. No, I got my Anfim in Seattle. Anfim pros : grinds faster. Its a bigger grinder with larger burrs. I got used to it, and it's hard to get used to longer grinding times. cons : A lot noisier. Hopper design is annoying. You have to reach in or shake the grinder to get the last 1/8lbs to the burrs. Not an issue in a commercial environment where you always refill the hopper anyway, but at home it is annoying. Not a stepless grinder, and there's a large grind difference between two steps. This is stupid : the range of grind size is very limitted. With a tripple basket I can't make the grind size large enough to get adequate flow. Huge design flaw. Too much coffee gets stuck in the chute. I feel the mini is better built overall, more solid feel. galpi VC9902@gmail.com wrote: > That's a great guestion, does anybody out there, whose worked with > both, have any preferece for one over the other. > BTW did you buy your Anfim in Montreal? Hey everyone, I changed my burrs and went through 5lbs of side b y side comparaison with fresh Vivace vita beans, Schomer technique, PIDed machine, dialed in both grinders. The verdict : - As much as I love the quality of the Mazzer and praised it for years as the ultimate home grinder, I have to say I'm getting a better grind out of the Anfim. I was so biased going into this and really wanted the Mazzer to win, but I'm sure you'll agree that what matters is in the cup and as far as I'm concerned I get a better cup with the Anfim. The coffee from the Anfim just pours with more body, the crema is fluffier and there is a richness to the coffee I'm not getting with my Mazzer. I'm really surprised to be honest, but to me the difference is obvious. This is a good reminder to stay open minded and experiment for yourself. In the end, it doesn't matter that my beloved Mazzer "lost", I believe this is another small step closer to perfection, and that's a good thing. Now the fun part : I get to modify the Anfim to install a worm gear to make it stepless ! Thanks everyone, galpi mrgnomer@hotmail.com wrote: > galpi@mail.com wrote: > > I'll try that ...
