Landrover reference for historical/love references - how I miss my 110...

New vehicle is a Jap imported Isuzu Bighorn/Trooper. 3.1 Turbo Diesel
and heavy enough. The Jeep was OK but has really soft suspension and
wasn't up to towing 2 tons. First trip out and the Isuzu hardly knew
the trailer was there. Might even get better fuel consumption too.

Nearly bought a Toyota (Barry), but can't afford a decent one.

Nervous early days with new vehicle - what can go wrong...

All the writing is in Japanese...

I miss the 110 and still poke my head in AFL quite often. Much
friendlier than the Jeep forum.

I drive a full range of rental diesel and gasoline powered box trucks -
16 to 24' and the Isuzu diesel is by far and away the best performing
one of the lot. Cruises at 75 with no problem and decent mileage.

If you don't know the service history - I assume it is used - change
the oil and filter but also change the fuel filter. No problem with an
Isuzu - just hope you never have to change a Ford diesel filter.

Good luck with your Isuzu.

Oil and filter done today. Fuel filter here, and awaiting change.

sounds like you've got a winner!

make sure to keep on top of that turbo maintenance.

i'll second butch's comments about the isuzu box trucks -- we rented
one for moving equipment into the warehouse and the thing was darn
near as fun to drive as my MGB. i'm not sure that's a good thing when
there's a load in the back....

No maintenance to speak of. It's a small, low performance turbo, and
provided the vehicle has regular oil changes and isn't turned off
before the turbo has spun down after a hard run it should be
maintenance free. Replacement turbos are only a couple of hundred
pounds if the worst happens, although I haven't heard of many breaking.

It's a 1993, and it only has 41K on it? Wish you could find things
like that over here... Well, make that "I wish you could find diesel
trucks over here that aren't the size of a house" too.

Can't find them here either. That's why it's a Jap import. Japanese
vehicles are good value (and RHD too), since they can't tow legally,
don't salt their roads like we do, and have to auction the vehicle for
tax reasons when there's still plenty of life in them. The auctions
perform their own grading, 1-6, with 1 being poor and 6 being like
new. Most good vehicles bought over to sell here are grade 4.

Ahh, ok. Unfortunately we here in the states are prevented from
importing most used vehicles, for some reason or another. Kind of sad
really, as I wouldn't mind having one of the Toyota turbo diesel
pickups, such as a Hi-lux.

Back in the late 70's or early 80's a friend had a Toyota pick-up with a
diesel. Can't remember if it was turbo charged or not but I do remember the
dual batteries needed for the glow plugs. You might be able to find one of
those somewhere abouts.

I recently bought a Jeep Liberty turbo diesel (4 banger with 5000 lb towing
capacity, 295 lb-ft of torque which is slightly less than my Chevy
454.....). Two years of manufacture and they've already discontinued the
darn thing. EPA regulations for diesel in 2007 are really stringent and a
lot of 2007 models have opted not to have diesel as an option. Too bad
since diesel engines are about 30% more efficient than gas. I recently got
30+ mpg on a trip to Colorado.

Lots of Hilux's here, mostly the Surf version (same as the 4Runner).
Looked at them but they all seemed to have sagging leaf springs.

Your owners manual is in Japanese apparently - if it does not say so on
the fuel filter - most diesel mechanics fill the filter with diesel
fuel before attaching it. Have you thought about getting a "shop
manual" for the Isuzu in English? I would go bonkers without - maybe
hard to find in the UK - let us know if you want "us" to sniff around
on this side of the pond.

Thanks Butch. I bought a UK Bighorn manual from the Isuzu Owners club
here. This is the owners manual. It appears that neither Haynes or
Chiltern etc have produced a service manual for the Bighorn/Trooper in
it's 3.1TD engine form ('92-'98). Neither are other variants
available (the Trooper was badged as the Honda Passport, the Vuaxhall
Monterey etc).

In the U.S., it was the Isuzu Rodeo (not the Trooper) that was rebadged
as the Honda Passport.

Wish they still sold the diesels over here!
