Hey Everyone, Just watched the new Will Ferrell vehicle last night. First off the movie isn't really too good although it hints at potential greatness untapped. The real reason why I am here today is because I was accused of being slightly femme by my wife after she noticed that the gay Formula One driver in the movie, played by Ali G, dug a lot of the same things. He and I dig bebop. I love F1 and go to the US Grand Prix religiously. He and I lovel dogs having two maltese myself. I am a big Francophile. And here is the kicker he and I love espresso. In the movie there is a scene when the French driver, Jean, is kicking everyone's butt and leading the race. They cut to him in the car and he is drinking out of a demitasse. At this point my wife whispers loudly, "That's so you!" Anyway, Ferrell finally catches up to Frenchy and bumps his Perrier sponsered ride. Ali G spills a drop of coffee on his uniform and mumbles in a bad French accent about Macchiato this, Macchiato that. Of course I had to explain to my wife that I only drink espresso not macchiatos and only occasionally cappuccinos. She didn't care, it is all coffee out of small cups to her. Now I admit to being a little isolated here in Phoenix. I roast and grind my own beans and make espresso that rocks the way God intended, with a lever. After seeing the movie I feel compelled to try out a macchiato. I want to make one now, the morning after but alas I have no milk. But back to the topic, are macchiatos considered to be a gay drink? I mean if I go to a respectable cafe and order one, will I be snickered at by the cognoscenti? To me a Mint Julep is a gay drink, 90% of the drinks at Starbucks are gay drinks, but a macchiato seems so masculine. Being similar to the word machismo, the mere enunciation of the word creates a spike in bodily testosterone (maybe another defense that Floyd can use). How is it gay? A Cappuccino has more milk and is less bold, yet the writers chose to have that Frenchman drink and spill a macchiato. I can't for the life of me understand it. Now I must bid you adieu as I need to visit alt.music.bluenote.jazz and rec.autos.sport.f1 with similar questions. Ciao, LeverMan -Pull one for me.

>>But back to the topic, are macchiatos considered to be a gay >>drink? >> Of course here in the UK we like to confuse things. Gay now means rubbish or crap. If you hear someone under the age of thirty say something like " He is so gay" in general they are not referring to the persons sexuality. This also applies to inanimate things as well. If a youngster calls a ringtone gay they are not talking about a rendition of YMCA but the fact that it is crap. As a fast approaching 50 male who would describe himself as gay I am not sure whether to be mildly offended at the way the word has been pinched, or shrug my shoulders and reflect on the fact that we pinched it anyway! In my opinion assigning or attempting to decipher if a drink has any connotation to a specific sexual orientation is a little silly isn't it? In my opinion it's just a movie and a macchiato is just a macchiato. Watch what you want and drink what you want without thoughts of anything else...

I think it's your insecurity that brings you out of the closet. How'd you hide it all these years? Next time you play Y.M.C.A. take a hard look at the musicians. Anybody in PinK? I don't think so (don't own that one, can I borrow yours?) The hardhats will kick your tail. Oh, and if you show up at their establishment, they might kick it again... The acid test is which form of your name you use. For example, if you are known as Robert, Alan, Bernard, David, Anthony etc, you're prolly gay. If you are just known as Bob, Al, Butch, Dave or Tony, you're straight. Also, if you know the names of more than a dozen colors, you're prolly gay. This whole thread is just ridiculous. I just saw this movie last night at the drive-in, and we both thought it was a lot of fun. It's not to be taken seriously, obviously. It's also for a younger crowd (I'm 23, she's 24). And I'll admit, I do enjoy macchiatos.. quite a bit. In fact, I often try to push them over on other people while on the bar at work. When the mentioned scene took place, I laughed pretty hard, and felt no threat to my masculinity. Just take it as what it was intended to be.. a joke in the form of jabbing at the French.. in more ways than one. regards, Jason H. http://coffeeaspirations.blogspot.com
