I've found the solution to one of my problems at least: http://tinyurl.com/eht6v. Having a 'real' coffee maker without having to crank up the generator will be a big plus when the storms start hitting this year. We ride them out & don't expect any problems as long as everyone remembers to tie down anything the wind can pick up & toss our way. We do lose power when a serious storm develops so our diesel generator does get used to charge up the BIG emergency batteries we have. Things like coffee makers, espresso makers, & grinders don't fall into the necessity category (to me they do but the ol' ball & chain disagrees), so any appliance that can be replaced with something that uses no electricity is a definite plus. For Rita last year we BBQ'd & grilled a lot on the natural gas appliance built into the back patio (a good thing) & we had a lot of French press (which I can't stand). So to our stash of hand-cranked flashlights, radios, & TV's, we can now add a real coffee maker! Unless the Melitta cone is not a "real coffee maker" by your standards, you can always stash one of them, like a #6, some filters and a Zass or equivalent and of course a way to boil water like a single burner butane stove. Worked for me when Kansas City was froze over without power for a week+ serveral years ago. Respectfully, Rich Adams

I just remembered. He has a Melitta Clarity. It works fine as a pourover. He's got gas for heating water. He's got emergency batteries and inverter(s) for the grinder.

Before moving to Florida, two years ago, I purchased a Coleman camp stove consisting of one grill and one burner. By the addition of an adapter hose I attached a large barbeque tank which gave me more gas than I could possibly use. After the three weeks blackout I had used less than 1/3 of the tank. The percolator, a left over from Boy Scout days, was a welcome change to the single mug pour over. The grill portion of the stove was great for giant soup pots of hot water for bathing. Unfortunately, at 6'4" a rather limited portion of the anatomy was able to use the soup pot so I had to use the "pour over" method. Boiling water -- in a pot -- on a camp stove and pouring it into a drip cone!! WHOA! sounds like a great low cost solution. BTW, rh is not allowed to drink coffee! My Wife's Cona pot would work just fine in that environment too. Yeah, I do preheat the water but it doesn't really do anything except save a little butane.... I suppose I could always put a Moka pot on that burner too... Hmmm.... Unlike Rich, our generator does power the espresso machine, and I use a Zass everyday anyway so I'm good. Ken

If you google back a bit, I think you'll find this coffee pot is quite slow. On the order of 10 minutes, IIRC.
