Subject: Atomics? Not just another steam toy?

Since arriving in Australia, I've been increasingly interested in the
Atomic. They're rich with heritage and more than a few fanatical users have
extolled their virtues. But I was wondering: once you strip aside the
pleasing aesthetics, is it pretty much just a kitchen hob anchored steam
toy? Is the taste similar to what you get with the likes of a Krups? Or is
there something that makes it different taste-wise. I'd be interested in
experience from users.

anthony - you bought one in berry - do you use it? How does it compare with
other the coffee from other machines you've used?

Cheers,

Gus

I found that the Atomic really cooked the coffee. The water was forced thru
the grinds at too high a temperature. It was very difficult to control the
steam to get anything that resembled micro-foam.

Compared to Silvia and Rocky it was a frustrating toy.

Sorry to break rank with those who swear by the Atomic.

Cheers,
Rusty

It's a longer drink than my espressos/lattes from my La Pavoni lever,
and is very similar in result to the moka-pots you see around -- except
the flavour seems to my taste-buds to be more intense, and it does have
the virtue of providing instant steam for abundant froth as well.
And of course, it's an aesthetic delight... I wouldn't give up mine for
anything. But I must admit that I use it maybe only twice a week, while
the Pavoni is on the go at least three or four times daily.

I on the other hand have found the Atomic produces a beautiful
sweetly-flavoured moka-style cup, never over-cooked. So I guess it's
really a matter of what suits one won't suit another etc.
I would however say that it's a bit of a luxury in that I'd add an
Atomic to the arsenal only after making sure I had a good grinder and a
good espresso machine at hand already..... it's an add-on, not a
primary machine.

Thanks all for the comments. It is an interesting machine in that like an
Apple iPod you want to love it -- even if it has shortcomings. And as
Anthony says, it may suit some people very well, but not others.
