I'm going to be wandering around SF tomorrow afternoon for a few hours. I need to buy a new espresso tamper. I'd love suggestions on where to shop. (Oakland isn't an option.) Cara Ltd, within walking distance of both Chinatown and North Beach. They are the one shop dedicated to espresso machines I know of. The last time I was there, they didn't carry custom tampers, but that may have changed. Their espresso blend is excellent and they will typically run out, rather than have old beans in stock. I recommend calling ahead. They do not have their own website: http://www.bpe.com/beverages/coffee/expresso_machine_sf.htm There's another place on the other side of town on Noriega St called House of Coffee. Last time I was there, several years ago, they had nothing in the way of espresso machines, but that may have changed. They are primarily a small coffee bean shop. The reason I keep them in the Rolodex is they roast on the premises and will sell green beans at green bean prices, provided the owner is in. The hired help are strictly sales droids and know zip about anything. http://www.lucidcafe.com/cafeforum/hofc.html Make sure you call ahead to see if the owner is in if you want to purchase green beans. nb

I wandered in one day (well, didn't actually wander as the front door is kept locked and you have to ring for admittance) looking for a small part (can't recall) for Lady S. The guy looked down his nose, sniffed a bit and sneered something about only doing the chrome peacock and its brethren. Then again, maybe they have a tamper that will fit. Nice neighborhood for a walk in any case and the shop is truly a museum to LaPav. There is no good coffee paraphernalia shop in SF that I'm aware of. Caffe Trieste has a shop, but their stock is limited. Again, worth the visit (you can walk from Cara's) but I'm not sure you'll find what you're looking for. Of course, for coffee, you really should try bluebottle. Either at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market on Saturday morning or out of their garage space (literally) in a Hayes Valley alley. Or, if you get to the Mission, there's Ritual. Good coffee. Nice place. Cool logo. Look for the red flag on Valencia.

Hmmm... they used to carry a couple other models (rancilio or gaggia, as I recall), but they are definitely pro Po. But, they aren't fanatical about it. In fact, they refuse to sell the LP home grinder because the motor is wimpy and prone to failure. Regardless of what they are currently pushing, they will take in your non-LP machine for repair. > The guy looked down his nose, sniffed a bit and sneered > something about only doing the chrome peacock and its brethren. That's just Chris and his stock SF gay affectation. He's harmless. nb > again, maybe they have a tamper that will fit. We had coffee at Ritual on Saturday. Oh! My! I'm really glad we don't live close to that place or I'd be a very broke and continually-wired mess. I had the finest latte I've ever had, smooth and not even a hint of bitter, with about an inch of microfoam, topped with a lovely "leaf" made by the skilled hand of the barista as the foam was poured. I could live on that stuff! Thanks very much for the pointer. Ritual is clearly going to be a part of my ritual when I'm shopping in the Mission district of SF. jc -- "The nice thing about a mare is you get to ride a lot of different horses without having to own that many." ~ Eileen Morgan of The Mare's Nest, PA

I am sorry I can not be of any help if you are only looking for the espresso tamper, however, to buy real good coffee pure and guaranteed to be from Puerto Rico I'd recommend shopping online at http://www.cafedepr.com where you can buy green as well as roasted regular and gourmet type of Arabica grown in the farm high in the mountains of Maricao and Jayuya, Puerto Rico. -- Disclosure: I have a vested interest in promoting Cafe Real de Puerto Rico and www.cafedepr.com "notbob" <notbob@nothome.com > wrote in message news:WqidndVdX4hg2-zYnZ2dnUVZ_qmdnZ2d@comcast.com... > On 2006-12-02, JC Dill <jcdill@gmail.com> wrote: >> I'm going to be wandering around SF tomorrow afternoon for a few >> hours.
