Hi all, The movie "Black Gold" is being presented this weekend as part of the 2006 Human Rights Watch International Film Festival at the Walter Reade Theater (Lincoln Center in New York City). I attended the screening last night, which was followed by a Q & A with directors Nick Francis and Marc Francis along with Tadesse Meskela (General Manager, Oromo Coffee Farmers Co-operative Union, Ethiopia). There is a showing today (Sunday) at 4pm and tomorrow (Monday) at 2pm. FYI, the showing last night was sold out! "Multinational coffee companies now rule our shopping malls and supermarkets and dominate an industry worth over $80 billion, making coffee the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. But while we continue to buy our lattes and cappuccinos, the price paid to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon their coffee fields. Nowhere is this paradox more evident than in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Tadesse Meskela is on a one-man mission to save his coffee cooperative's 75,000 struggling farmers from bankruptcy. Against the backdrop of Tadesse's journey to London and Seattle, the more powerful sides of the international trading system come into focus. Official Selection, Sundance Film Festival 2006. Presented in association with the New York African Film Festival." Great movie - saw it in Portland not long ago and highly recommend it to anybody involved in the coffee business. It truly shows you how most cofffee is sold throughout the world and the problems facing the local communities and producers. jason Erwin Chuk wrote: > Hi all, > > The movie "Black Gold" is being presented this weekend as part of the > 2006 Human Rights Watch International Film Festival at the Walter Reade > Theater (Lincoln Center in New York City).
