Subject: Capresso Infinity Upper Burr Life

I just wanted to establish a data point for MY Infinity grinder and
make an observation or three. I am not bashing the Infinity. I bought
the grinder about a year and a half ago. I like the relatively quite
grinding it provides along with everything else. I grind one pound of
coffee (for drip) a week therefore I have ground about 78 lbs. in this
grinder.

I have been roasting my own beans and admittedly believe I have had
issues with getting the center of the bean as roasted as it should be
(just my opinion). This may have increased the toughness of the bean
but I am not sure if this would be enough to dull the burr.

The leading indicator was the fact that the timer on the front could
not be set to complete a 10 cup grind. Originally the grind was
accomplished by setting the timer on 8.

I have revised my roaster to provide more drying capability (airflow).
I still get about 17.5% loss in moisture but I believe the bean is more
evenly roasted now whereas before the outside might have lost what the
inside was still retaining. This was a result of the higher roasting
temperatures. This is just my theory but I have not detected the
grassy essence which I have, on occasion, in the past. Even with this
improvement the coffee was taking longer to grind.

I discussed the wear on the upper burr with Capresso. They thought that
the burr should have lasted longer. Of course the stone theory was
brought up by them. I inspected the burr and saw obvious wear on the
upper and lower portions of the burr geometry, not so much in the
middle. I see no apparent wear on the lower burr. I am sorry but I do
not have a Rockwell tester at my disposal any longer becaue I would
like to sample the hardness of the burrs.

The new upper burr arrived today at a cost of $19.00 delivered. Close
inspection of the burr geometry reveals that it is significantly
different than the original burr. It appears more aggressive AND
robust. There is much more area in the valleys of the new upper burr,
similar to the lower burr.

I was never impressed with the maximum course setting which I use for
FP and it would be great if this, by chance, improves.

I thought about trying the Rocky for drip and then decided it would be
too demeaning.
