I have an Elektra Microcasa Semi (the little HX machine) sitting next to my Tea. Anyone interested in pulling or tasting shots from them can come by next week. Email me first. --- Jim Schulman coffeecuppers.com jim_schulman@ameritech.net

Or the week of the 14th? If the week of the 14th, I'd be up for a road trip and bring along some of my shop's espresso blend for critique and tasting. North Sullivan

We had a small turn-out (there was Jim, and then there was me). But the coffee, food, wine and conversation were outstanding. I highly recommend Jim as a host. It's always fun to meet the people who write the posts on alt.coffee. I think if there were more get-togethers among alt.coffee folks, people would be surprised how nice just about everyone really is in person. North Sullivan

The star of the show, the Elektra was up on blocks (actually, food encyclopedia volumes) with an add-on OPV and needle valve hanging out underneath. All this high ac-tech accomplished was to make the shots too weak - The mcirocasa works better at 14 bar than at the canonical 9 (I have it at 11 today, which may be the charm). Fortunately, I had Miguel's (Paradise Roaster's) latest Ethiopian Gem on hand (the Heche Sidamo, review coming soon, but don't bother waiting, buy it now). So the coffee front wasn;t a complete waste of time. The converstaion was a lot more fun. North roasts on an ancient, formerly fire and corrosion challenged, Diedrich, patched with duct tape (never know it came at such high temperatures - I may give up on using tin foil for my roaster patches). The resulting coffee is superb, not so much Tuesday on the pressure challenged Elektra, but today at it's happier setting. However, North's regular customers probably couldn't care less; they pay a lot more attention to the gossip than to the coffee. For anyone contemplating making the switch from amateur to cafe owner: perhaps the bartender's course in listening would do more for business than the barista course in serving stellar shots. In any case, if you think it's about sharing the drink you love with an appreciative audience, stay an amateur!
