Subject: Coffee grounds in espresso - normal or a sign of...?

Hi, I am frequently seeing coffee ground in my otherwise fine tasting espresso. Is this normal or is there something that can be improved ? Best regards Peter Rancillio Silvia Gaggia MDF

However, actual grounds in the cup (which taste extremely sharp and unpleasant) can be indicative of other problems. I've been having this problem too and got some advice from here and HomeBarista which worked for me, and in general the tips were: (1) Make sure you're not tamping in an area with loose coffee grounds on the surface because they will stick to your pf spouts, and also make sure the underside of your filter basket is clear of any loose grinds (2) Make sure your gasket is thoroughly cleaned - this allows a proper seal to form when you put in the pf, and also make sure you torque in the pf quite hard. (3) Unlikely but check that your baskets aren't damaged or warped (4) Finally something I tried (because I don't have a very good machine) was a 'start-dump' where you let the first second or so of the pour run into the drip tray. Hope this helps Dave
