Long title but if your from New Zealand you'll know what it means
(sorry if i'm excluding anyone else out there, not my intention at
all.) Just wondering how many of you out there are from NZ and
consider yourselves bonified professional baristas? how many of you
love coffee and just how much? and finally what do you think of the
coffee scene in New Zealand?? sorry if any of this is a little much but
trying to figure out the scene in NZ and wondering where everyone
thinks they fit into it and where they think it's going....
Any thoughts??
Anyone
Peace

Well, I'm not from White Cloudland, but from a near-neighbour continent
which speaks a fairly similar tongue ... but I can report that on a
visit some eight months back I did find a little cafe in Napier which
served a fantastic macchiato. And that same cafe did better thin-crust
pizzas than I've ever been able to find over here! Can't remember the
name of the place, but you can find it easily enough by just asking the
waitress to put on the CD by Madeleine Peyroux -- if they've got it,
that's the place ...

I speak for all Kiwi alties when I say we drink instant coffee, preferably
"No Frills", out of preference to all other coffee.

Naturally we often struggle with the challenge of making instant, as nobody
has worked out the process to take our freshly roasted beans (from a range
of rosters from popcorn poppers to larger commercial drum roasters) and
convert them to instant granules. I guess it's that number 8 mentality that
makes us perservere.

I suspect that part of the problem is that we have thus far only been able
to source fresh high quality arabica beans, and will I imagine soon pool
together and bring in a container of old vietnamese robusta and give that a
go...

:)

I think anyone passionate about anything falls into the dork category
in some was or another... I actually prefer geek or nerd though. Takes
a lot to explain to, how should i describe them... an outsider i guess
about the beauty of crema, velvet milk and the perfection one can
achieve vs the horror of burnt and over-extracted drinks. It's kinda
similiar to when i VJ at gigs... everyone else is partying hard and
we're the geeks hanging out behind our computers all night... It's
beyond epic but takes a certain kind of person I think....
HA
Viva la Dork/Geek/Nerd

In a slightly more serious vain...

Not aware of any pro baristas from NZ that lurk here, of course lurk is the
operative word... most of them hang around on coffeegeek, cos it's got
pictures!

There are however a great number of passionate proffessionals in the coffee
industry in NZ... and some dorks. Not sure where I fit in, but I am sure Rob
will put me in my place :)

yup, I am Dorklander and proud - got the latte stains in the car to prove
it, but I do have a provincial background... and I have even visited remote
outcrops of near civility like Christchurch... :)

I'm an Aussie living in Wellywood, and have been making coffee full-time
for five months now - but nowhere near classing myself as a professional
barista! There are an amazing number of commercial roasters here, and I
was lucky enough to get work with my favourite.

Work for me has really transformed from a "romantic" notion of just
making coffee for people, to a daily challenge of chasing the perfect
base. And milk! Just when you think you have found the secret.....

I haven't travelled around NZ much, but I swear that coffee over here is
far more advanced compared to anything in my native Brissie. Whenever I
go back to visit with family I can hardly drink the coffee from the
cafes I used to frequent.

So much more to learn!
Matt.

Haven't heard that before ... like it!
I'm in fact from the Blue Mountains in NSW, just two hours by train
from the New Zealand suburb of Bondi.

cups?, machines? i don't know but whatever it is only their coffee is
bad - the cappus and lattes are great from the chain store by the
harbour to the lttle cafe in northern north island.

sorry but yuck! i went ot auckland and all the coffee i had was
terrible... it was nearly all slightly overextracted weak ass single
shots. Sorry but coffee is meant to strong. I did have one okay
coffee in this random place in a mall opposite a record shop on K road.
It was really weak though but at least it tasted right. Oh yeah I
quite like people from auckland... especially my friends but being from
AK doesn't mean you know what good coffee tastes like, kinda like being
from Wellington doesn't instantly qualify you either.... but you're
still lovele people
Peace
