I recently gave my machine a very thorough cleaning. Took the
screen and plate above it out of the group, cleaned said group
'til everything ran free, cleaned all parts to as new condition,
put it all back together and ran water until tasteless...

All looks good (and works well with respect to results) but almost
every shot, there's a small divot in the puck around 2 o'clock.
Always in the same place - so I figured it must be a high pressure
spot. Fiddled everything. Nothing visible to the eye (no high
pressure spurts or such like) just a small hole in the top of the
puck.

Is this a common problem? I'm not overly worried as the drinks are
fine - but my esthetic sense is violated...

Try turning the shower screen 180 degrees and see if it moves.

I have a similar problem from time to time on my VBM. When filling the pf
basket trying sweeping from back to front for the final sweep instead of
front to back see if that changes things. Yes probably a little messier
doing it this way.

Is an oddball machine distributed by Canadist some years ago. See
http://www.magma.ca/~neal/Coffee/index.html
and as I explained, I care. Not because I think it's important -
but because I'm a coffee snob. I like to understand things. When
something happens for no apparent reason...

Randy suggested I turn the dispersion screen. I turned it such
that the divot spot (if it followed the turn) would appear at 6:30
rather than 2 o'clock.

The divot appeared at 11:00! Then I made a decaff for my wife -
different coffee, different grind. No divot.

I think I experienced something similar with my Brasilia Lady, infact
for a long time I was trying to figure out just what was causing these
little holes in the puck. I think I narrowed it down to being a design
quirk with the dispersal plate the machine uses to distribute the
water.

Regardless, since adjusting my technique by grinding finer, and
lowering my dosage by around 1-2grams, the problem hasn't surfaced
once. I think the increased clearance with the showerscreen somewhat
compensates for the less than perfect water dispersal.

Neal,
I had that problem one time and I traced it to the fact that the
machine was unlevel enough to create problem with water distribution
within the PF.

If I get a divot in the puck it is ususally in the 2 o'c position really
strange, happens a lot less with under dosing (probably closer to 14gms)
happens more with over dosing ie fill then tap firmly on the bench before
sweeping etc. My machine is a VBM 2 group.
