Subject: Double espresso. How much water to use.

How big is a double espresso ? I'm new to this & my double espresso shots
are approx 50ml. Is this about right ?

A little off topic perhaps but do people with machines like silvia use
a double basket to do 30 mls? I do.. as I find the standard single
basket crap.
At the moment if I'm making two coffees I do 2 x double baskets. Anyone
else do this or something similar?

Use the double basket and pull a "standard" double shot, then add hot
water. You get a larger beverage that is generaly smooter than trying
to force too much water through the coffee. This is often referred to
as an "Americano."

Well, he could do that for the Americano, but I like cremas better.
Just pull 2 5 oz. cups through the loaded portafilter with a double=shot
filter. Makes for a smooth, strong coffee. Personally I find
Americanos to be a bit watery.

Are you loading a double basket with coffee grounds, pushing thru 30mls,
discarding the puck, loading with coffee and then pushing thru another
30mls?

Most aim for 1.5 fl oz+ (45ml) from a double basket.in approx 27 seconds
from switching the pump on. You may be going for the shorter 30ml shot,
because you are getting early 'blonding' before the 27 secs.
This may be caused by chanelling of the puck, which suggests uneven
distribution of the grounds in the basket. John Weisse's method with a
needle (I use a cocktail stick)

read.
There could be other factors, if you mention your machine and grinder, other
alties may know if there's a problem - or maybe you just prefer the taste of
a shorter shot.
