Subject: ECM Botticelli II

Just wondering if anyone has experience with the ECM Botticelli II and
whether they would recommend it. There is a review over at
coffeecrew.com that is complimentary, but I haven't been able to find
any other reviews (period). Billed as something just a bit better than
the Silvia, I am wondering how well it performs. The purported more
robust steam and quietness is appealing, and the thermometer doesn't
hurt. I am looking for something primarily for cappucinos and lattes.

I've had a unit for about three months now and couldn't be more
pleased.
Temperature seems very stable. I'm able to draw off three or four cups
(once I drew six) with no probs before hitting the 'steam' button to
lift the temperature for the very very robust steam. No complaints on
that score.
It takes only a minute or so to drop the temperature down from steaming
to brewing, to make it possible to draw more espressos, by simply
expressing water via the hot water/steam wand.
Coffee tastes just great, right in line with my La Pavoni Professional,
but of course with the advantage of being possible to keep on making
coffees all day ....
It has a beautiful build quality; v solid heavy portafilters etc; as I
say, I haven't regretted the purchase for one minute.
I'm in Australia but my recommendation is global!

Hi Anthony,
I just received my ECM Botticelli today and gave it a trial run this
evening. I have a question. When you turn on your machine what
temperature will it warm up to? The reason I ask is that after I turn
mine on it reaches about 185 farenheit (85 centigrade) after about 15
minutes and never gets any hotter - unless I activate the steam. So for
making a latte or cappucino, I can steam the milk and then make the
espresso when the temperature falls to 200 degrees (94 centigrade). But
what if you just want to make an espresso, how do you get the
temperature up. Just trying to determine if I have a defective unit or
whether it is a case of operator error. Any thoughts would be
appreciated. Thanks.

And actually Chris' has been linking to my 'pid' offerings for about 5
or 6 months now.
sold about $70K of rancilio and etc., YTD -- ebay and direct.
So with Chris and Mr. Schulman and many others things look great and my
detractors seem have lost a little of their energy.

I believe that your word is good enough for anybody looking to buy an
expensive espresso machine. But how good is the word of your beneficiary in
case, God forbid, something were to happen to you?
So, if you're carrying the warranty a person that bought PID'd Silvia from
you would have to hope you're around for that year. While you type like a
healthy enough person it still seems like a bit of a risk to me.

I think the temperature dial may be rotated about 10 degrees as it is
about 10 degrees too low compared to my house temperature. I am going to
put it through the paces over the next couple of days and then give them

Hi Richard
Try it a few times to see how it settles in .. but generally speaking,
mine comes to about 90 - 91 Centigrade and sits happily on that level
all day ... so I draw the espressos and let them sit on top of the
machine to stay warm, before hitting the steam button.
The 85 degree mark does seem too low, so I'd query the retailer on that
one...

I made a few lattes tonight to gain some more experience with the
machine. Can't believe how much steam power this thing has - compared to
my old Starbucks Barista this machine is nuclear - it almost steams the
milk too fast :).
Your post answers my next question I think. What do you produce first,
the espresso or the steam? I noted that after steaming the milk, the
temperature was around 220 or 230, and it takes quite a while to cool
off from there. The only way I could figure out to bring the
temperature down after steaming the milk was to use the hot water
button. How do you bring the temperature down to make another espresso?
Just curious.
With respect to the temperature, I think the thermastat background might
be rotated a little because I keep my house at 70 and the dial reads
60-62 farenheit before I turn it on, which would explain why it appears
to run about 10 degrees low.
I plan on giving it a pretty intensive test run over the next few days
to see how it works then see if I need to give the store a call.
Oh yeah, one more question. When I turn the unit on, the manual says
that the two top lights are supposed to come on. On my unit, only the
top light comes on. The second light turns on when I turn activate the
steam and turns off when the steam is ready.

Same with mine .. the top light only comes on till the right temp is
attained. It then comes on to indicate that steaming temp is being
reached.
But after initial use, that second light does however come on out of
the 'steam' mode if it's cooled down a bit and is heating back to brew
temperature.
Hope that helps .. it seems normal.
