Subject: ECM Giotto in hong kong not working due to mineral content in the water?
|
A freind took her ECM Giotto Premium from Sydney to hong kong when she moved. We both bought our ECM's from the same shipment, and they were both working perfectly in Sydney. When she moved to Hong Kong her machine started working erratically, and then stopped producing enough steam to foam say half a 600ml jug. I thought it may be either leaking from the boiler, not heating up properly or filling up with too much water, the first two suggestions were not the case. This all happened without any provocation, and my machine is still working fine. now i thought the fill sensor in the machines boiler is triggered by the conductivity of water, which is compromised in reverse osmosis water. and that maybe the water in hong kong is filtered so much that all of its mineral content is lost, thus reducing its conductivity and not telling the machine to stop filling with water, which is producing less steam in the boiler which is resulting in lower boiler pressure and less steam...... phew!.... I am also considering the fact that the water level sender unit may simply be faulty. am I right or is there another (much simpler) solution to this problem.?. thoughts would be greatly appreciated.. cheers, evan

Sounds like her boiler isn't getting hot enough. The water sensor will turn everything off if there's no current, so that's out, plus HK water has sufficient ions to work anyway. First thing I'd check would be pressurestat setting (should be 1.2 bar), then boiler level probe, then brain box. -- Alan alanfrew@coffeeco.com.au www.coffeeco.com.au

I wish it was. Most of our bottled water is so pure that it would cause a few probs. By all means I can try and help your friend if they drop me an email. Paul

You could always put a pinch of salt in the water reservoir. That should provide plenty of conductivity and barely affect the taste.
