My daughter has found herself stuck on campus with no car and the college espresso is totally undrinkable. I'm thinking a small french press and electric tea pot would be good??? What would be a good electric tea kettle. I notice there are a lot to choose from. Any other suggestions on how she can best get her coffee fix? Thanks! -Tony-

Times have probably changed since I was in college in the 1950's, but we could not have heating element appliances in our rooms back then due to fire hazards. Good school for that. Yale has a good program too, but this was a lot closer ;-) It's my fault, I got her addicted to espresso. Some sort of genetic chemical deficiency that runs in the Jester family I suspect. We can't live without it. I'm sending her a whirly blade and Melitta one cup cone. I found out there is a kitchen in the dorm so she doesn't need the electric kettle which turns out is against the rules. Thanks for the advice! -Tony-

I bought it eons ago, I think from Crate and Barrel, but your nearby Target or Walmart might carry it or something similar. As for a grinder, I wouldn't pay that much for something to make French press coffee in a dorm room. Have a look at what Costco has for sale. Alternatively you could just buy a Melita plastic one cup cone for about $2.50 and a supply of cheap filters. I actually prefer brewed coffee made that way to what I can get out of a French press. One advantage of the Melita cone is that if the cheap grinder makes a lot of dust, the paper filter will catch it whereas it will come through the mesh in the French press, into the coffee, as "mud." ken

I fill it from bottled water and just arrange my stuff so I can pour with the kettle plugged in. Most small kettles don't have removable bases. We have a larger Braun that does and it is excellent with a much better design for the connector.

If you wanted to stay on the safe side and fit in with a student schedule and impulsiveness , a nice Japanese hot water dispenser would really be best - hot water all the time, no risk of spills. http://www.qvc.com/asp/frameset.asp?aol_refer=false&msn_refer=false&nest=http://www.qvc.com/scripts/detail.dll?item=K118566!tpl=DETAIL!ref=GBA&ref=GBA&cm_ven=GOOGLEBASE&cm_cat=COOKING%20%26%20DINING&cm_pla=KITCHEN%20ELECTRICS&cm_ite=K118566 Not just for coffee, but tea, instant noodles, etc. Alternatively if the dorm allows microwave ovens, you can get even more use out of one - just heat the water in a glass measuring cup - you just have to be careful not to superheat the water. Once you know the correct timing to get you to 200F, that's no problem. A small microwave would cost no more than a hot pot. I'd go with a pourover Melitta cone and paper filters - more compatible with a whirly grinder, easier cleanup.
