I frequent a pair of coffee houses run by the same people. Both shops use the same blend but one has a FB 70 and the other has a GB 5. After weeks of adjustment and fiddling around they have managed to produce what I perceive to be identical tasting shots except that the shot from the older FB 70 has more body. The shot from the GB 5 seems a little more transparent. Both shots have the same volume and are the same temp and take the same amount of time and begin with the same amount of coffee. Has La Marzocco tweeked the basket on the new machine? Is there any other avenue to explore?

Maybe the two machine's Gicleurs(if they have any) are different, which could contribute to in the cup differences. Different grinders, maybe pressure, maybe water, even temp stability could all cause this as well...

Presuming the FB70 is an auto, then the pressure rampup is faster than on the GB5 if the GB5 has new style group caps. The FB70 will be harder to keep up to temperature compared to the GB5, since the GB5 has feedwater preheat and the FB70 does not. I would want to know the actual pressures and temperatures at which the machines are brewing. Plus, to make really meaningful comparisons the machines will have to be fed identical coffee (same roast batch), ground by the same grinder, and fed the same water. Last winter I had the distinct pleasure of simultaneously using a GS3 prototype and my PID'd Linea. Both machines were installed across the aisle from each other in my little basement kitchen (Espresso Research, LLC lab) and I had the opportunity to directly compare shots and improve the deficient machine. I was able to use the same water source, same grinder. I had the measurement equipment on hand to make heads or tails of my progress, and finally got to where the Linea performed similarly to the GS3 in terms of taste. It took a lot of work and careful control of testing parameters, something that will be very hard to do if one machine is located in a different shop from the other. -Greg ROO wrote: > I frequent a pair of coffee houses run by the same people. transparent as opposed to full body Like if you take a shot from the GB70 and dilute it with water just a little.. The shop is going to reheat shots from both machines to try to do a blind tasting. They are also going to swap baskets . Basket tweeking no doubt. I think that a law should be passed, that simply outlaws this type of behaviour. Happy Friday..... ROO wrote: > I frequent a pair of coffee houses run by the same people.
