Subject: Familiar with Faema steam wands?

Hi folks,

I recently added a temperature probe to the boiler of my Faema. The
machine has two steam wands, one conventional and the other a "magic
frother" or something like that. I don't use the magic frother, not
believing in magic...

Unfortunately the most convenient place to locate the probe was
through the conventional steam wand connection on the boiler, so now I
have no steam wand except the magic one.

I'd like to switch the wands so that the conventional one functions.
However, the one on the left side is attached to the left side of the
knob fitting, and the one on the right is attached to the right. I
guess that these parts are interchangeable so long as you reverse all
the pieces, but am not sure.

Is this the case? I don't think I've seen "left" and "right" steam
wands advertised, but maybe I've just missed them.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Thank you Al,

It is a Faema "Cappuccino Magic" like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/FAEMA-Cappuccino-Magic-Milk-Frother-Brand-New-NR_W0QQitemZ7628923220QQihZ017QQcategoryZ53304QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

In my case it is attached to the right hand (looking at the machine)
steam valve, on the outboard side.

Hope the home life has settled some.

Best,
Paul

Thanks, Paul.
You should be able to remove the frother and put a regular steam tip
on the wand. If that still leaves the wand too short or doesn't work,
let me know. That is really an old school frother. If fI had a better
view of the cinnection to the machine, perhaps I could see if I had a
wand that would replace it. I suspect I do. I'll dig around and see
what I've got....al

Hi Al,

Yes it is circa 1988, the machine is a No Stop. I can't believe that
guy is getting $100 each for those frothers - he used to have around
100 available. When I first saw his auction a few months ago I said to
myself "this guy's kidding himself." But now he's down to 50, and the
"completed listings" seem to indicate that people are paying his
price. $5,000 sellling ancient frothing devices of dubious
functionality on ebay? With another $5,000 on the horizon? Wow, time
to sell mine for seventy-five bucks!

Please don't go to any trouble looking up the connections. I just took
some photos of the two valves and will post them to
alt.binaries.coffee. It will become immediately obvious that my
photography skills are not "skills," but hopefully you'll be able to
get the gist of how the wands are hooked up.

I believe the threading on the end of the "magic" wand is incompatible
with the other steam tip (magic one way too small), but also,
unfortunately, the magic wand is not bent to allow it to swing forward
far enough to get a pitcher under it. So I do need to use the
conventional wand.

Thanks again,
Paul

I posted 5 photos to alt.binaries.coffee but they don't all seem to
have made it to my server - the two that have come in are out of
order, making me wonder if the others are lost somewhere. If you can't
get them from your news server please let me know and I'll just email
them.

All five made it here... out of the four.

Thanks Steve, obviously I am arithmetically challenged...

Funny that my own NNTP server still shows only two though, maybe
they'll show up tomorrow... At least I'll hold off reposting for a day
or two given that they made it to you, thanks for telling me.

you should be able to swap those wands side to side. they appear to
be very similar to older marzocco wands. if so, there's a circlip
holding a retaining washer against the spring. remove circlip,
washer, and spring. the wand is a press fit on the inner "pipe", so
gently wiggle it off. there are likely two o-rings on that inner
"pipe", and those will need to be replaced on the "pipe" on the other
side of the machine when you re-mount the wand. be sure to lightly
lube the o-rings with something before you install the wand (food
grade grease; olive oil; nose grease; spit; etc), or they may deform.

You're right Barry, thank you. I swapped them and all is fine now.

I used mineral oil, which should be fine, but never thought about the
lubricative properties of nose oil, which I will consider next time
since it is free, and I have an abundance of it...

Thanks again,
Paul
