Subject: Gaggia Baby won't prime: advice sought

Nobody posted on coffeegeek, so I'd appreciate ANY suggestions.

I have stored in my hot garage a Gaggia Baby. It was bought new, lovingly
maintained (RO water only), and used for 1 year old. It went in the garage
when I got the Giotto.

I got out the Baby (with my Giotto temporarily disassembled) and it won't
prime at all (steam wand valve open, or closed, doesn't matter). No suction
on the water tube. Even when I try to blow water up the tube, it won't go
at all. Everything looks pristine inside. The pump makes lots of noise when
I engage it.

Any ideas of what I could try?

Looking at a parts unit in the shop . . . .

if it is of fairly recent manufacture, the last 15 years or so, there
is a single white -- kinda stiff -- teflon hose of about 3" length that
connects to the OPV on the bottom of the boiler. that is the hose to
check -- loosen remove the fitting at the elbow coming out of the
pump, then try the pump. the teflon line is the 'high' side of the
pump.

Thanks, Dave. I took off that hose, and yeah, the pump still won't pump, so
it's gotta' be the pump, I suppose.

Can an Ulka pump be broken, even if it makes the loud pump noise? Then
what's making the noise? My previous experience of pumps was that they
either worked or they were dead.

Output tube on the pump? Or output tube somewhere else?

By the way, Dave, am I right that the Baby only has one plastic tube (the
intake tube on the left) and that the pressure relief tube is just a nub
over on the right (recesssed into the body) which aims/drips into the water
reservoir?

It depends on what's broken.

If the problem is electrical, then the motor isn't running & it is very
quiet.

If the problem is mechanical, such as a leak between the input & output
side of the pump, then the motor will still be running noisily but it
won't be able to pump.

Well the ones I get here -- the pumps if they are bad are already bad,
if that make sense.

But I wore out a pump on a personal Gaggia classic in the mid 90's
and it faded rapidly from a good shot to a few days later -- dead --
but loud!!

And in MY experience an Ulka with the output disconnected, or working
into a normal load will quickly (3 or 4 seconds) and rapidly prime
itself, sucking in first, air -- loud -- then water -- much quieter .
