If you could get a new Gaggia MDF grinder for $199 or a refurbed Kitchenaid Proline grinder for $149, either with free shipping, which would you get? Which would you consider the best for the money? -- Coffee Lover http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Coffee_/ http://pleasehelpjennifer.com/

If you go to my homepage at: http://home.earthlink.net/~crimsoncascade/ and click on the link for Gaggia MDF at Amazon, it's $174 with free shipping (use SAVER as a coupon code at checkout). I was over at Starbucks tonight, for my weekly Frapuccino espresso and was talking to one of their people and inquiring about a grinder. She said their Barista Burr Grinder is good for both coffee and espresso, that she got one for her parents and it makes nice espresso too. Thinking it might have just been prejudiced salesmanship, I went and looked it up at coffeegeeks reviews: http://www.coffeegeek.com/reviews/grinders/starbucks_barista_grinder An overall rating of 8.1 is not a bad rating for a lower end grinder like that. "Tom Oravec (quality: 4.0) 09.26.2005 Rating: 8.2 Bottom Line: You CAN make espresso and even ristretto with this machine Peter McDermott (quality: 8.0) 05.18.2004 Rating: 7.6 Bottom Line: If you life in the UK and can't afford a Gaggia MDF (the next grinder up), this is your only option for espresso." It usually goes for $99 but they have it on sale here for $89 now. -- Coffee Lover http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Coffee_/ http://pleasehelpjennifer.com/

You'd be wasting your money, but be our guest. You will be told that the Capresso Infinity will also make espresso, and one of my two made espresso for a month or two before it didn't anymore. The burrs are not hard enough and the build of the machines not exact enough to produce the grind over time. So I look at as if I wasted $89, not saved $89. Anybody can post a review. Anybody can say "I make delicious espresso with my Krups steam toy! It's gotta' be good, it cost me $200!" Yes, the Barista burr grinder (actually a rebadged Solis 166) CAN be used for espresso...For about six months of decreasing quality. This only after opening the case and readjusting the grind range. The MDF is a far superior grinder. However, I'd still buy the Tranquilo. The MDF is limited by it's range of grind settings. Many times I wished I could grind in-between settings. (Which you can, but it takes a steady hand holding the hopper) The Tranqiuilo has much better adjustability as well as being a commercial unit. Mike

The Doser vs Doserless debate is a long standing one. If you look at it cup half full, then just know you'll be happy with whatever one you get. If you are a cup half empty kind of person, just know that whichever one you get, you'll think you should have gotten the other one. Truthfully, it doesn't matter. Either works fine for either espresso OR normal coffee. It simply doesn't matter. All a "doser" is a receptacle for the grounds that let's you release some of them at a time. Positives for Doser: Much less mess, as grinds don't spray on the countertop. Also, you can grind the beans while you're preparing the machine and you don't have to stand there holding a portafiler or other receptacle yourself. Negatives for Doser: The doser itself traps some stale grounds, and so is one more thing to clean now and then. Personally, I lean a little in favor of the Doser, but I notice that the webpage says they're temporarily out of the doser model. I should have added that the Dosered Cunill has a tamper on the doser, which would save you the cost of buying a tamper. Can't grind fine enough. Thanks. It does look like I should just spend the extra money and get the Gaggia MDF. Just gotta figure out what I can sell to get the money. -- Coffee Lover http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Coffee_/ http://pleasehelpjennifer.com/

I'd get the Gaggia MDF or, as I posted before, a Cunill Astra/Tranquillo. Did you notice this message above their Gaggia espresso machines? These machines are no longer available and are listed here for historical purposes only. If Gaggia aquires a new US distributor then these particular models may or may not be available at these prices. Most likely, there will be new US models with new US prices. We are sorry but we can not answer questions about the availability of Gaggia espresso machines. But they say the grinders are in stock. The best price I have found for the MDF was $150. Used models usually go for more than this on e-Bay, often in the $130-$140 range. Are these reconditioned? The Gaggia MDF. The KitchenAid was vastly overpriced to begin with. I bought the kitchenaid grinder and it gums up on me with that little shoot opening and then starts spraying all over the place. Get one that's self-contained and does'nt shoot into an open glass. It's a very nice grinder for coffee. A step up from almost anything most people are using.
