Subject: George Howell's Terroir Coffees

My very first exposure to good coffee was at George Howell's Coffee
Connection in Harvard Square. (I read somewhere that Howell's first
exposure to good coffee was at Peet's in Berkeley -- though the CC
coffees have always struck me as much lighter roasted than the Peet's
coffees.) I was horrified to learn, I guess it was in the early-to-mid
90s, that the Coffee Connection had been bought out by Starbucks.

Anyway, George Howell is back -- and has been for some time, I guess --
with the Terroir line of coffees. I have yet to try any of them. How
do the members of this group assess these coffees? Are there any
standouts among them?

George now lives in the suburb of Boston, calmly managing his company.
His factory is actually quite interesting for such a small size.
They even host occasional tastings and coffee seminars.
Check out his website. He has invented a process to freeze coffee which
will keep the flavor and stop the aging process. ...actually quite
interesting. His coffees are simply out of this world. To me, he is the
aristocrat of coffee.

I've done just that. I was fascinated to learn of George's activities
between the demise of Coffee Connection and the birth of Terroir. I
also enjoyed the Coffee Connection slideshow; a couple of those pics
brought back memories!

We should have an altie get-together at Terroir. If anyone is interested,
I'll make a call and see what I can arrange. You New Yorkers should come
on up for an afternoon and join us!

Count me in.

BTW, for those new to Terroir - there's an open house at Terroir in
Acton on Saturday, July 28th from 8 to 11 AM. They ask that you call
them at 866-GHH-JAVA to reserve.

I rarely pimp my own site here on alt.coffee, but in this case....

There's a two part interview (taken verbatim from a podcast interview)
with George where he talks in depth about how he started in coffee,
about Coffee Connection, about Starbucks buying it, and about CoE and
even home roasting. They are here:

Part 1: http://www.coffeegeek.com/opinions/theinterview/09-02-2005
Part 2: http://www.coffeegeek.com/opinions/theinterview/09-28-2005

Nice!

Thanks Mark.

thinking I had misread the email, but I doublechecked it, and its
friday :(

Yikes, you're right! *I* misread the email - perhaps because having it
on Saturday seemed so logical. :(

If I'm free on the day this is scheduled, I'll definitely be part of it.

Thanks, that was a great interview! I love the story of George
grinding beans in Howard Johnsons' mens' rooms and adding their hot
water to his plunger pot to obtain good coffee in the early 1970s.

Incidentally, the original Peet's store on Vine in Berkeley -- the one
that turned George Howell on to good coffee -- is still there,
generating ridiculous lines on weekends. I've had hundreds of good
coffees there. I bought my first espresso machine there.

There will be another open house on a Saturday in a little less than a
month, but I'm not sure of which Saturday yet. I think these are a lot
of fun and mutually educational. Hope to see you!
