Subject: Going to Milan, Italy - Suggestions?

Hi!

I got an irresistible offer for an airfare to Milan.

Now I am looking forward to 3.5 days in the city (mid august):

I'd appreciate your suggestions on:

-Places to drink good coffee.

-Places to buy coffee beans and brewing equipment?

-anything that may be of interest of a coffeeholic.

thanks in advance

As for ice cream--called gelato in Italy, I don't think you can have
any bad gelato. Everyone we tried was excellent. It must be the
precursor to our ice cream. But their gelato has no air, no seaweed
stabilizers etc. & what ever else is in US ice cream, gelato seems a
bit softer but it is excellent! We especially liked "mente" gelato
but I bet all are good.

My gelato-making client buys all her ingredients from Milan.

LOL! Most Italians outside of Milan may take exception to what you
said ;)

Of course - what's the saying, 'If you've got three Italians talking
there'll be four opinions.' I really meant synonymous with espresso
machines, since it seems all of the biggies either make their machines there
or in the immediate vicinity.

I was in Italy just a couple of months ago & compared to the best espresso
you get here it was all good. But that's what you'd expect in the city
that's synonymous with espresso. Most of the top brands are manufactured in
Milan or within easy driving distance. The concierge at our hotel made a few
calls & wangled us an invitation to a couple of the factories for a first
hand look. That was a blast! As far as the ice cream - it's almost the best
in the world. If it weren't for the gelato I had in the Veneto I'd say Milan
made the best in the world. There's a gelateria inside the galleria that
made a ginger gelato to die for; sweet, tangy, smooth as cotton candy, &
compared to what true gelato costs in the U.S. very cheap.

Damn, I'm getting jealous that you're going & not me!

Torrafazione Il Caffe Ambrosiano, best place in town (according to
former world champions and taxi drivers). Day barista is a well oiled
machine.

Aw man, if only I had known this before I went in March! I do not recall
having a bad coffee anywhere...but no God shots either. I typically
ordered a Caffee Doppio at the bar, and it was Euro 1.80.

BTW, for a restaurant...good value...try Strippoli:

Try Googling
milan espresso machines
at Google Maps and see what rich possibilities there are out there....

Now all you have to do is get invited on a factory tour.

Not far NW of Milan is Omegna, home of Bialetti and wonderful
scenery....

For an uncaffienated high, go through the Castello Sforzesco where you
will see Michaelangelo's Rondanini Pieta.
