I will be travelling in Italy during September, and would like
suggestions for great coffee places. I will be in Venice, Siena,
Florence, and the Lake Como area for sure, and possibly in the
Dolomites.

thanks very much

I can't give you specific recommendations, although I am sure that others
will do so.

All of these destinations you list are are very touristic. As a general
rule, the more touristic is a city or area in Italy, the lower is the
overall quality of the espresso available. Fortunately there are a lot of
exceptions and I'm sure that you will get some serviceable recommendations.

Since you won't always be able to follow specific recommendations, in
general, if I were you, I'd avoid espresso bars close to prime tourist
attractions, and any place that seems to have primarily tourists as
clientele. If you can stray a little off the beaten path into neighborhoods
frequented mainly by Italians, you will in general find better coffee.

I was in Venice a few weeks ago where, following the advice of Mrs.
Elkins I sought out Caffe del Doge http://www.caffedeldoge.com/. They
offered a high quality espresso, brewed in hand pulled Brasilia
espresso makers from a selection of fine estate coffees including one
from Cuba (contriband in the U.S.). The firm has two Venice locations;
Calle dei 5, Rialto and Ponte del Lovo, San Marco. Hotel Danieli
serves Caffe del Doge. The second floor terrace restaurant at this
vereable five-star hostelry overlooks the lagoon

continental breakfast is memorably delicious, the views are spectacular
and the cost is about $65.00. The coffee is from Caffe del Doge. Want
to try a cuppa closer to home, Cafe del doge has a new US outlet in
Palo Alto CA.
