Subject: Knock box useage?

I just got a knock box
(http://www.anothercoffee.co.uk/products/item190110.aspx) and am having
problems using it. Which makes me feel very dumb. Weither the grounds
are wet or dry when I do the knocking some of the grounds fall on the
bar and I then am hitting the bar with grounds on which end up getting
splattered round the room. Am I doing something very stupid?

Thanks in advance
Amber

Some possible solutions:
-First 'tap' the PF downards wth less force a couple of times before
"knocking" hard to loosen the puck.
-Don't knock the sencer of the portafilter body. Hit the bar with the
near or far edge so that when the puck comes out it doesn't hit the
bar at all:

Hit it harder!
that may help.

Thanks for asking the question, Amber.
I had thought of asking it myself after I bought my fab little
Grindenstein (supporting local industry....). But I've found after a
couple of weeks that the problem irons itself out as you go into
auto-mode -- adjusting without thought the knocking-angle (well,
really!) till you're working in an almost splatter-free zone.
It does help that we have a very large and deep old-fashioned ceramic
laboratory sink as our kitchen-sink, and I stand the Grindenstein in
there. Only the walls get the occasional splatter, which gets rinsed
off immediately. I'd always stand the knocker-box in a sink for
operation, just in case ......

A *long* way from local for me, but I recommend their product to all.

There's only two of us at home, but we drink a lot of coffee! We empty
the Grindenstein every two to three days, which isn't a chore since
there's always a pot-plant or bit of garden needing some fine mulch
.... cleans up a treat with just a rinse, and although it's small enuf
to fit in the dishwasher with no drama, we just haven't felt the need
yet. It's small, discreet and neat.

To "razmoo" - I echo Anthony's comments exactly - in our case it's mostly me
drinking coffee - so every 5-6 days I empty it into the bin for the compost,
and swill it out. Nicely made, looks good, does what it needs to.

I have moved it to the sink in the mean time. And I was using a bowl
and spoon to scoup it out, but I have had many a blonde moment and
knocked the spoon out of the bowl flicking grounds everywhere. I kinda
figured shops use knock out boxes so they must be cleaner. Making
coffee always seems a messey buisness, shame it tastes so great.

Mine is black -- looks very cool against the all-chrome La Pavoni and
white cupboards .. my daughter was going to buy me one until she found
I'd already picked one up .. her choice was emphatically red!
