Subject: La Marzocco double basket(s)....?

I have been a big fan of the LM double basket for some time, being an
early adopter and never looking back. Recently I purchased some parts
including a Rancilio commercial PF as so got a second LM double basket
to go with it. Much to my surprise, it is not the same as the one I
previously used. They are both stepped, but slightly different (*the
upper step is the one that counts here):

INSIDE DIAMETERS

Original: - 2.298(58.42mm)
New: - 2.280(57.9628mm)

The problem is that my 58mm tamper does not fit the new one properly,
or at least well My tamper is 2.280". The very close fit with my 58mm
tamper makes tamping difficult if even a little coffee gets between
the tamper and the basket (which it always does). Switching back to
the old basket yielded better results.

I do remember when they first appeared that some folks were
complaining about the LM baskets and difficulty in tamping with the
"standard" size tamper and originally I was wondering what it was all
about because my basket, which I had assumed was a "real" LM double
stepped basket, worked fine.

Now this has me wondering...
Did they change the baskets?
Was the first one I had not original?
Being that these came from two different suppliers, could that be it?
Has my tamper grown?

As for the screens from Spain, I would stick with the OEM La Marzocco
issue screens. Our experience has shown that the aftermarket units lose
tension and then leak around the edges. Oddly enough the LM screens
from Spain are a cross over from Cimbali? All I know for sure is that
the OEM screens are far better and that makes me and my customers happy
;-)

That's where mine came from.

Hi Randy,

It is pretty well documented that there is some variance attributed to
the die and stamping process. Needless to say I've always used 57mm
tampers as the basis for any LM basket. I just pulled some "genuine"
baskets off the shelf and well, let's just say that again there was
some variance.

There was some thread (cgeek??) about people getting custom tamper
sizes down to 0.01mm, I believe it was Terry who offered his advice
that due to these basket variations getting such an accurate tamper
wasn't worthwhile.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen any mention of the screens around, I
have some generic "parts wholesaler" ones that are shockingly awful.
Some are approx 59mm so the basket won't fit anyway, almost all of them
have the wrong sized hole in the centre so the LM diffusor screw won't
go in and don't get me started on the spot welding burns on the back.
Can't believe that they passed QC in Italy.

What is all this 58mm business anyway? the 55mm plastic knob on the
front of my grinder works very well indeed :)

I noticed when I got a new brew boiler on my 2 grp LM that either the screw
hole in the screen wasn't centered, or the hole in the group isn't centered,
so the screw is harder to turn. If I tighten the screw without the screen
tight against the diffuser plate, then this isn't a problem though.

i've got screens from ascaso that are the same way. the center holes
are about .5mm too small.

This sounds funny coming from someone who sells expensive tampers.

Is the leakage around the screens very apparent? I've noticed that
after prolonged use, the mesh on the screens seem to bulge out and the
water isn't spread quite as far. Do you guys change your screens on a
regular basis?
