Also, any suggestions for brewing espresso above 8,000 ft? I know I
will have to dial down the PID set point on my Silvia to compensate for
boiling point at approx. 197F, but am wondering if there are any other
tricks.

TIA.

Good luck.

I tried beans from McDonalds Bookstore (roasted down in
the valley by someone else) and from the Brewing Market
(next to McGuckins in Boulder) and found both seriously
lacking. Beans from the Starbucks kiosk at Safeway were
better than both of these places.

Ever thought about home roasting? I take my own roasted
beans when I go to Estes to visit my parents.

I found a place called Kind on the internet - I might try them first.

We are part-time home roasters - just didn't get it done before
leaving.

Thanks.

Having just come back from 9100 feet and using my newly PID'd Silvia there
start with a PID setting of about 7-8 degrees cooler than normal. I had
been getting a lot of steam through the brew head before being able to
control the temperature and this made a huge difference. Will the pour
match what you get at home? Probably not since you're brewing cooler. If
you don't like the shots, make an Americano out of them which will help take
the sour/bitter taste out of them.

Can't help with a roaster recommendation.

Kind Coffee Company in town (470 E Elkhorn Ave) does a decent job:

http://www.kindcoffee.com/

When I visit Estes (my second home, BTW), I usually stick to the press
pot. But, decent espresso can be had...the Notchtop Cafe in Safeway
Plaza does a good job, and they use Black Cat from Intelligentsia.

Hi, Bolo -

Thanks for the reply. Kind Coffee fixed me up with a pound of beans on
Saturday that I have been very pleased with. Plan to buy some more
later in the week to take home with me.

The PID is set down to 219F and this is giving very good results. None
of the sourness I expected at the lower temperature.

Of course, maybe with the the fantastic views of Ypsilon Mountain from
my cabin I would have been pleased with instant Nescafe, too.
