Subject: Looking for decent grinder for drip/french press......

I'm currently getting back into home roasting after a lengthy time
off, and could use some opinions on a good grinder. I have read a lot
of posts about grinders for espresso but not many for a coarser grind.
I currently have a Cuisinart Supreme Grind and think it kicks out way
too much dust and static. The most important aspect for the new
grinder needs to be a consistent grind with no dust if that's
possible. I don't care how loud it is, how big it is, or how it looks.

Have a budget of ~ $300 - 400.

Opinions please?

-Steve

Mazzer mini, all the way.

[or a Macap]

The more plastic parts -- the more static.

For your budget, I'd go with either the Gaggia MDF for $198.00, the
Rancilio Rocky for $295.00, or the Mazzer Mini for $429.00. All will
meet your requirements, although "no dust" may be asking too much. None
of these will be completely dust free, but all will create very little
dust. If you're not going to be grinding for espresso, you may want to
consider the Solis Maestro Plus for $149.00, although it will create
more dust. Most dust is caused by static, but some is merely a
by-product of grinding coffee! Some is inevitable. These prices are
from WLL, and may vary up or down a little, depending on different
retailers, sales, etc.

I can see where the mess the dust creates is exacerbated by static,
but how does static create more dust?

What you said- that's what I meant. Static attracts the dust, making
the dust already there more prevelant and messier. OK- unconfused again
now..still?

Some time ago, some alties were posting ref a machine badged under Nemox,
Lux etc. I believe it has a 800 rpm motor, which should reduce the dust. Is
this machine still on the market, anyone? TIA

Cordo, thanks for the 1st line link. Their Lux seems identical to my
Aerolatte, ( bottom of page) http://www.aerolatte.biz/indexl.html apart from
the switch being on the wrong side of the road. OT, I thought my Hearthware
Precision had ceased production, but this has phoenixed itself under
Aerolatte.
Back on topic, the Aero/Lux is a good domestic grinder and would be ok for
drip/FP, mine works well with my Zaffiro and 4 clicks courser, gives me good
results in my Bodum FPress. Another plus with the Lux is it's tiny
footprint.
However, if space is not an issue, I would go for the more solid semi
commercial grinders mentioned above, as I suspect they will live longer.
Before buying, check that spare burr blades are available, as these will
wear out before the motor.

Yep, the Aerolatte is a Nemox Lux; silvered hopper lid is the giveaway.
