Subject: Marzocco Filter Basket in Sylvia - tamper fit

I've recently purchased a double Marzocco Filter Basket to use in my Rancilio Sylvia in the hopes of obtaining thicker shots with darker crema. I have a 58mm tamper that fits nicely into my Rancilio double filter basket, however when I try to use it in the Marzocco basket, It seems to be slightly too large. When I tamp with it, my tamper can get stuck in the basket (it seems that maybe the basket slightly too narrow. Has anyone else had this experience? I thought that both baskets were 58mm so I thought my tamper whould work in both. Any thoughts? Advice? Thanks!! Jenn

It seems to be 58mm for the top 1/4 inch, but then it starts to taper in. <Omniryx@gmail.com > wrote in message news:1161017907.191535.235510@m7g2000cwm.googlegroups.com... > Harry Moos wrote: >> No, the Marzocca basket is not 58mm. Everyone's sort of right... The problem is that the LM baskets have a wide range of tolerances. I have two of them- one works great with my 58mm aluminum tamper and the other barely works at all, to the extent that a little coffee between the tamper and the basket jams the tamper. I believe there was a thread about this not too long ago. About 3 years ago I posted all the double basket specs for La Marzocco ridged, "ridgeless", stock, Ascaso La Marz style triple width at a properly loaded basket approx .300" down into the basket, overall dimentions., etc. Unfortunately I can't access Coffeegeek to get the URL for the post, & I'm leaving for day 2 at Trade Show., HostEx 2006 http://www.hostexshow.com/ Craig.

No, the Marzocca basket is not 58mm. Most sites that sell it have that in the description. The little plastic tamper that came with my Silvia works OK in it, but not the 58mm tamper. If I'm not mistaken, the ridged double basket takes a 57mm tamp base. It's what I use with mine...

I measured them with a dial caliper and they are both round, and of different sizes. Randy "the small one looks bigger in the mirror" G. http://www.EspressoMyEspresso.com

Thanks everyone. I'm glad I'm not alone in my tamper issues :-) I too have found that the first 1/4 inch of my basket fits my 58mm RB tamper just fine, but past that, not so much. I guess I must have gotten one of the smaller ones. I wonder if it's worth ordering another one to see if I get a bigger one this time :-) Thanks again everyone. On 2006-10-17, Jenn <jennifer.wickman@gmail.com > wrote: > of the smaller ones. I wonder if it's worth ordering another one to > see if I get a bigger one this time :-) That's pretty iffy. You might consider putting the tamper through a 360° up against a belt sander. nb
