Subject: Moka Kadir: Profile 10 = Light Roast?
|
I've been roasting Moka Kadir for almost 2 yrs with an original iRoast. Just got an iRoast2. I decided to try the Profile 10 for the first time (Confirming that it's 320/5, 375/4, 385/2, 400/1, 410/3). My target roast was a Full City+, maybe a little on the dark side. I figured I'd have to shut it down a little early. I was surprised that the iRoast ran it's full 15 minute course and that the result was barely a City. Most of the beans were City-ish, but even after 15 minutes, there was still chaff on a fair number of beans which eventually came off in the cooling stage. Whatcha think? I have roasted a couple of batches of other non-blended beans with good results (not profile 10) to maybe a Full City. Should I up the temps a little or is it possible that my iRoast is defective and doesn't generate enough heat? btw... I did notice on Profile 10 that the motor stays on high speed for the entire roast.

Good thought, but not the case. First roast of the day. My second roast was after calling Haerthware. They suggested dooing their profile 1. 450 for 10 mins to see if heater worked. I expected to have to shut down early, but it ran the full 10 mins and only got to Full City or maybe FC+. I'm calling Hearthware tomorrow re results. But any comments are appreciated. Just a thought here, by any chance had you roasted another batch immediately prior to the roast you mentioned? When I roast back-to-back without unplugging the roaster to clear it, it will behave exactly as you described.

Hmm, if you go to http://www.sweetmarias.com/roasted.pict-guide.html, you'll notice that the chamber probe temp for city roast is 425, with 400 being the INTERNAL bean temperature. I'm surprised you got to 1st crack at all with the highest temperature setting being 410. On my iRoast2, I ramp up the temp evenly ending at 460 for 5 minutes. that usually gets me to a vienna roast for espresso with at least 3 minutes to spare in case i should want to go for full french. My guess is you should try a different profile, Robert

I was equally surprised when I first read about it, so I emailed Randy G and he said that the iRoast temp isn't accurate. That the internal bean temp can definitely get to the right temp when iRoast is set no higher than 410. I have since modified my curve, adding 20 degrees to each. It still went the full 15 minutes and I ended up on the verge of FC/FC+. So my next batch will be maybe 10 degrees higher. I'm trying to get to a darkish FC+ after maybe 14 mins. Also, I've also roasted other beans and they seem to roast must faster. It's the Moka Kadir that is slow. But thanks for the reply Bob512 wrote: > ahurvitz@gmail.com wrote: > > I've been roasting Moka Kadir for almost 2 yrs with an original iRoast. > > Just got an iRoast2.
