SEATTLE - It's a party at Starbucks.
The local coffee legend is celebrating its 35th anniversary and as
part of the event, they're handing out their old logo.
The problem, some folks found that original logo offensive.
"This is degrading to the women of today," says regular Starbucks
customer Theresa Miyahara.
The 1971 original is "a twin tailed mermaid, or siren as she's called
in Greek mythology," says Starbucks Carol Pucik. The siren also has
bare breasts.
Pucik says every hot beverage cup in their Washington and Oregon
company owned stores will feature the original logo over the next two
months.
"Its really for nostalgia," says Pucik who agrees they meant no
offense.
Before Starbucks was ubiquitous worldwide, the old logo was still well
known around Seattle. You can still see it at the first Starbucks in
Pike's Place Market.
But in the early 1990's, there were growing complaints about the
appropriateness of the original logo and the company gave her a
'modest makeover.' That's the logo used widely today more focused on
her face and barely showing her fins or chest.

KENT, Wash. -- Starbucks' decision to revert to its original mermaid
logo this month is causing a stir at one local school.
Thirty-five years after the first cup of Starbucks was sold, the java
giant is returning to its artistic roots. During September, Starbucks'
cups are sporting the original logo, a familiar mermaid. But for some,
the sketched depiction clearly showing the mermaid’s breasts is a
little too much skin.
A Kent elementary school principal has asked that teachers stopping
for a cup on the way to work be sure to get a cup sleeve to cover up
the image.
"The principal at that school made a decision that she thought that it
could be distracting for students," school district spokeswoman Becky
Hanks said.
One student we talked with agreed.
"The kids would talk about it ... like, ‘whoa, it’s the naked lady’,”
said Victoria Awiten, 12.
Awiten’s dad, Dave Phelps, wasn’t particularly disturbed.
“I think she’s seen worse in movies,” he said.
Whatever distraction there might be, he said, it doesn't call for a
rule.
Other residents say they don't think so either.
"If I had an elementary school kid, I wouldn’t care,” said Uma Ramiah.
Hanks said the cup rule is not a district wide policy, just one
request by one principal for the month of September.

I worked at an animation studio that had the Pillsbury Doughboy
account. I believe the filthiest thing I have ever seen was an

OK, I was annoyed when they sanitised the original logo. I was disgusted
when they removed the belly button. People like Ms. Miyahara are more
offensive and degrading to women than any 15th century depiction of a
NON-HUMAN MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURE!
It's rare when I approve of anything Starbucks does, but this is kind of
cool. Honestly, some people need a life.

Yes, sadly there are those that are outraged by the appearance of a bare
breast. Even a cartoon-like 'drawing' of a bare breast gets them all worked
up.
But they only talk about it during the commercials, while watching their
favorite prime time shows on TV. The ones where people are getting their
heads blown off at point blank range, with blood splatter on the wall behind
them for more entertainment value. No sir. That's not degrading at all.
That's entertainment!

Well no, not really. There is a milk gland, but it occupies only a very
small part of the bulk of the average female breast. Most of the breast is
fat, just like man-boobs. This is why there is no correlation between
breast-size and milk supply in breast-feeding mothers. Look at the other
primates, such as chimps. They don't have large breasts like humans do, yet
they can breast-feed their infants perfectly well.

All I can do is roll my eyes. "Hooters" the restaurant chain could be
called offensive. Living under Taliban law is certainly degrading for
women. But a coffee cup??
These people DO need to get a life.
And the kids at that school probably would pay no attention to their
teacher's coffee cups if such a fuss weren't being made over the
original Starbucks logo, Starbucks cups being as ubiquitous to modern
life as they are. Say nothing about the logo, make no attempt to hide
it and the kids probably won't care, much. Try to hide and act like
kids are too innocent and sensitive to handle it, and the kids will be
going crazy to find out what the logo looks like.

For those few worried about being temporarily exposed to the sight of a
drawing depicting highly simplified female breasts, just turn your
head. The logo isn't in use, and is being shown much as an exhibit of
old drawings might be. Why don't those doo-gooders focus more on the
magazines available in the grocery checkout line that regularly depict
the female form in various stages of undress. Not to mention museums,
books on naval history, innumerable statues, paintings, etc.
I venture to say one could find postage stamps and currency with the
female body in some stage of undress too. Should those be benned from
public use and view too?

The original Starbucks Mermaid trademark model was found, according to
Starbucks founder Jerry Baldwin, in an old 15th Century Nordic woodcut
found in a picture book. The bawdy babe was found in a rather
suggestive pose spreading her tails above her head inviting the local
Seattle mariners to enjoy her wares. She had somewhat more sass than
what fictional Seattle local Lou Grant would have recognized as
"spunk."
She has changed, through the years in addition to going from being on a

all fair.
The interesting thing to this coffee trade history student is the
unusual level of control Starbucks has over media. Sanitizing and
simplifying the company trademark, and icon as the company grew, went
public and international is to be expected. Starbucks has taken its
control of its image even to its word description of the change. What
was begun as a "modesty makeover" has become sanitized as a "modest
makeover." Starbucks corporation excels at controlling both its
corporate image and the news content on the company that filters
through to the fifth estate.

It's an adverse cause-and-effect. The best places to work (great
companies, great bosses, great policies and practices, good pay and
benefits, etc.) have no need of unions. Unions are opportunistic just
like infections. Where there is weakness, unions can get a foothold.
I'm neither for nor against unions - my son is an IBEW member. I'm
just sayin' .... the best companies have no need for unions.

For all the years I've bought coffee at Starbucks, I would have to say
I really never even noticed the logo. Before this had I been asked to
describe it I would have been at a complete loss. The Starbucks name
and it's color are what draw me to the store. I patronize them because
they are the most convenient source of a good cup of coffee. Not
because of their politics, employee relations, sale of fair trade
coffee, presence or absence of union activity, membership in the CofC
or anything else. I just care about what they sell.
