Subject: New PF for Estro Vapore

When I was getting undrinkable shots one after the other from my almost 10
yr. old Estro Vapore, I called Starbucks (where I had purchased it.)
I gave them the results of some of the standard tests, i.e water flow
through an empty PF. Their web site says that there should be 2 oz. in
15~20 seconds. Mine was producing 2 oz. in 10 seconds. The Starbucks
helper advised me to get a new Portafilter, and told me where I can order
one.

Thirty six dollars and twenty four cents and a week later the package just
arrived from Saeco Outlet containing the new PF. what a difference a
decade makes in quality of materials and workmanship. The old PF and
baasket weighed in at a hefty 14 oz. The new one looks like it was cast
without any finishing, uses a lot more plastic, and weighs 6-1/2 oz!

The proof, however is in the espresso. I stopped roasting when it became
apparent that my equipment was at an impasse. The only roasted espresso
beans that I have on hand are some two week old Malabar Gold and a little
SM Monkey and Classic Italian that are even older. This afternoon, I shall
try pulling a shot from the Malabar Gold, as I recall that one holds up
better with time than the others. I shall report my results, which won't
be too scientifically conclusive as yet.;-)
