Im sure its quite obvious that the plastic/metally taste I get, is due to my Silvia being only two days old, but I wonder how long such foul taste will appear? As my nick suggest, Im not sure Im able to detect this taste in the espresso (at least without any refferance), but its been utterly distinct when using the hot water for tea. Also cooled down a sample in the fridge to make sure, and the coldness didnt make it any more pleasant. When water quality is such a big part of a good espesso, Im sure this makes a big impact. With all the Silvia-owners in here, Im sure someone could tell how long this problem will last.

make some steam, flush it out. There is NOTHING in there that will produce this. Or return it. dave

I never had a plasticy taste from my machine. My first impression (with no evidence at all- just an impression) from your description is that they are using parts made in China (the water tank or pump parts?) and some of the materials they are using in China now emit the sort of tastes/smells you describe. In order of likelihood, the plasticy taste could be from: -The water reservoir -The Pump -The tubing Take the reservoir out and wash it thoroughly with hot, soapy water. Use a wash rag or sponge and scrub its interior thoroughly. Do NOT use any abrasive cleaner or scrubbing pad. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. When dry, fill it with water, allow to sit, then taste the water directly from the reservoir (not pumped through the machine). If the taste remains, try leaving the reservoir out in the sun for a couple of hours and rewash and test again. If the taste is not in the reservoir water, return it to the machine, fill it, and try your pump-and-taste test once again. if the flavor is still there, then the taste is coming from internal parts. Run a full reservoir of water through the machine to thoroughly rinse out the machine, and try again. If the taste remains, run a load of citric acid cleaner through it following the directions on the package and then THOROUGHLY rinse out the machine- that can take as mush as two or three tanks of water! if the plastic taste is still there, return the machine. Thanks for the reply. The same taste appears with or with out the PF, or just using the steamwand. Just tried running a couple of litres through it, refill with fresh water, let it heat up and then taste the water. Alot less metal taste, but still there. Do you have to "empty" the boiler (let _lots_ of water run through the steamwand) each time you gonna pull an espresso, if the machine have been standing for more than an hour to avoid a metal taste from the boiler?

Even standing for a day or two.. or even a week is not a problem. A SLIGHT metallic taste MIGHT be noticed in a new machine, or possibly with water with an acidic balance, but it should go away quickly once the machine has "seasoned" a bit- like the first few uses I would guess. maybe try some bottled drinking water to see if it makes a difference, in order to rule out your tap water....? I didn't have the problem when I got mine. I flushed it with two tanks of water prior to use and all was good.

A new espresso machine should never have such a taste. Yours obviously has a contaminant that's giving you an off taste. I'd suggest talking to the retailer about a replacement. If it's not in warranty try flushing it out using a descaling solution of 3 tablespoons citric acid to one quart warm water, followed by two quarts of clear water. Oh, and to make sure the filter isn't the problem run a shot through without it. -- Robert (duck & cover) Harmon http://tinyurl.com/pou2y http://tinyurl.com/fkd6r "coffeenjub" <heltfeil@gmail.com > wrote in message news:1154107206.587801.205920@s13g2000cwa.googlegroups.com... > Im sure its quite obvious that the plastic/metally taste I get, is due > to my Silvia being only two days old, but I wonder how long such foul > taste will appear?
