Subject: Portafilter unscrewing

Okay.... Please can someone help? :-)

Gaggia Carezza.

Been working fine for the last 12 months but, today it's started
leaking like heck around the portafilter. So I completely strip it down
and clean everywhere. However it's still pi**ing out!

Anyway the problem is due to the portafilter unscrewing! I can see it!
I ram the filter on hard and then switch the pump on. For a few seconds
all is fine and then the filter unscrews a few degrees and the water
starts pi**ing out! :-( When this happens I can't seem to wrench it
back on tight whilst it's leaking out :-( It this a sign that
somethings worn?

BTW I changed the seal a few months ago and it's always been very tight
getting the filter to lock on. However I good wrench and I've always
managed to get it to hold on and seal no problems up until the fault
started :-(

Is this gods way of telling me it's time to get a lever machine for
Christmas? :-)

I think the first option sounds most likely (seal too thick).

Can anyone please suggest the best place, in the UK (online), to get a
new seal from? The last ones I got were definately too thick: sinceI
fitted the new seals, I've always had a problem fitting the filter.

Thanks

Steve

It could be:
MOST LIKELY:
- The wrong gasket that is too thick. 1mm can make a big difference.
- An old gasket (even if it was new to you) that is hard.
- You didn't clean well enough under the gasket before installing the
new one.
LESS LIKELY
- The ears on the brewhead are damaged or worn and not holding the PF
correctly any more
- The portafilter itself is worn or warped.

Don't suppose you know where to get the correct seals? :-)

BTW I've looked at the problem more closely now and I can see what is
happening. The chamfered edge on the side of the filter housing has a
steep section and a shallow section. It looks like the housing SHOULD
twist on far enough for the shallow edge to locate onto the head.

Problem is, my seals are so thick the filter is only just getting as
far as the shallow section of the chamfered edge. The other problem is
the filter basket is now a touch more loos in the holder so what
happens is the holder can twist in relation to the basket. So the
basket is holding onto the seal but the holder is not correctly
locating onto the chamfered edge in the head. Then, as the head gets a
blast of hot water it expands and so pushes down on the chamfered edge
(which is only just locked onto the head) and hence twists unlocked a
few degrees. Then the water starts pi**ing out :-(

So I need the correct size seals.

They're rubbish on email, but brilliant on the phone. Call em, and give
your card number, and they'll have it with you in a day or two.
