I've never had my hands on a hydraulic pump machine & now there's a Conti
on eBay at a dirt cheap price that's caught my attention. There's not a lot
of info about them so I thought I'd toss it to the group to chew up asd to
whether it's worth playing with. As I understand it the machine is a piston
design without the lever, relying on water pressure to compress the
water/grounds & extract the shot. If this is so how can it achieve 9 bar
pressure (Of course it could have a four inch bore & 1/4" stroke, giving it
the mechanical advantage needed, but I doubt they do that.)? I'm tempted to
buy one of these just to tear apart to satisfy my curiousity. Thoughts?

Robert, your guess as to how hydromatics work is correct. The piston
driven by cold water is proportionally bigger than the smaller one
pushing water thru the grounds. You work these by playing with the
inlet water pressure to effect the correct pressure above the grounds.

To get prices from NR you have to register with them as a customer.
There is an email link on their page to do so. I don't know about the
US distributor but the factory have a 300e minimum purchase.

cheers and good luck, braver than me!

Keep a couple of things in mind. First, in addition to the "dirt cheap"
price, you'll have to pay to have a pallate built, this 140 pound
object bolted to it, and have it shipped to where you are. Then you'll
need a dedicated 30 Amp 110 Volt service, if the wattage rating is
correct. Then, they tell you it needs parts, so I'd make sure I knew
where to get them. Some are here:
<http://www.nuovaricambi.it/inglese/index_eng.html >, but you want more
than that, you want a repair person with whom you can develop a
personal relationship. Sounds like it might be a fun project, but it
won't be "dirt cheap" when you've finished, and I wouldn't count on
making espresso with it soon.

Best,
David

I handle my own project work & make those parts not readily available.
Shipping shouldn't run more that $400 - $700 & I'm wired for 110/240 50 watt
service to two GFI outlets in my kitchen (I already have a Cimbali
commercial unit). What I was hoping to get was more info on how the
hydraulic machines performed.

BTW, I can never get access to the prices on this site. Is there some deep
secret as to how to get them to approve your userid request?

As far as nuovaricambi's website, it appears to be malfunctioning for
getting userid's ("run-time error"). You can contact them at:
Nuova Ricambi
Via dei Mille,20
P.O. Box 11520061 Carugate (MI)
Italia
tel: + 39 02 92 53 205
fax: +39 02 92 54 286
(email: info@nuovaricambi.it)

OR, you can try their last-known US Distributor:

Nuova Ricambi USA
6380 Tupelo Dr
Citrus Heights, CA 95621
(916) 729-6399

OR, you can contact Conti itself at:

http://www.conti-spareparts.com/

choose English, and you can create your own account very easily. I didn't
see the single-group model you're talking about on their page, so it might
be easier to try talk with the USA distributor first about parts
availability.

P.S. Conti's main website is at: http://www.conti-espresso.com/

Good luck.
