I was discussing HX machines with someone & something about the Oscar came
up. He said there are really two Oscars, old & new versions and that the old
version had serious problems.

I recommended an Oscar on eBay for a friend & now I don't know if I gave him
a bum steer or not. Are there old & new versions & if so what's the
difference and how would one distinguish one from the other?

I used to own an Oscar. As far as I know the only difference is that
the "new" one uses a Sirai pressurestat because the cheaper
pressurestats they were using tended to fail. Mine held up fine
though, so I had no complaints. I haven't read about any other
modifications, but I'm just a consumer.

I'd still recommend Oscar wholeheartedly, new or old, fwiw.

Thanks for the tip. Will the new p-stat fit in the older machine?

Yes, with a shoehorn. Seriously, I believe you can buy a kit that
includes the pstat and all necessary pipes and fittings. I imagine
this would make installation much easier (though more expensive) than
just buying the pstat and fabricating your own plumbing.

I believe Chris sells an "upgraded" or "extra good" standard home
pressurestat for though who can't fit a Sirai in their machines.

Yes. Mine has been replaced with the new, larger p-stat. I didn't do
the job myself, though.
In the few years I've had my Oscar I've had a few parts fail and require
replacing: 2 p-stats, 1 expansion valve, and the plastic water tank which
sprung a leak at the bottom seam.
All in all, I think I would have preferred a simpler but more robust
machine.

the oscar has developed a rep as a fairly crummy machine.

apologies to those out there who think otherwise.

When people call and ask me about 'em, I steer them elsewhere -- indeed
AWAY FROM ALL HX machines, period.
