Subject: Quantifying temp. surfing with a non-PIDable machine

For the past 2 years I've been battling with my Delonghi Bar 140 espresso machine. As it's pod capable, it has a 46mm basket (you wouldn't believe how hard it was to find a 46mm tamper). Anyways, after much trial and error, I've managed to figure out how to pull decent shots from it, and removing the joke of a frothing attachment from the wand, I can occasionally make decent enough foam to produce latte art. My question being, since I payed $60 for it, It would make little since to try and PID. Until they stop raising tuition at the University of Kansas every year, I won't be able to get a decent Silvia to PID. Would it be worth it to attach a thermocouple to the boiler of my Delonghi (like the one Sweet Maria's sells), and use the digital readout to surf? That seems to be the only remaining factor that I can control on this machine. Robert

I had that machine. My guess (being someone who does NOT PID) is that the boiler is so small that when you are pulling a shot, so much cold water is entering the boiler that a PID setting the initial boiler temperature, or even kicking in the heating element during a pour, isn't going to have much benefit. But that's just me guessing, C "Bob512" <Robert.Figueira@gmail.com > wrote in message news:1154370678.807470.113730@b28g2000cwb.googlegroups.com... > For the past 2 years I've been battling with my Delonghi Bar 140 > espresso machine.
