Do these things do any good? I had one with my Silvia but never used it
since I filtered my water twice. But I can see where they could be
indispensable for someone living in an area with a high level of minerals
suspended in the drinking water. I'm just not convinced that these little
things will do anything worthwhile but if I'm wrong why isn't one included
with every espresso machine sold?

In the water heated to tank levels, they remove about 2/3rds of the
calcium if kept charged. They also last about 2 years, and have seemed
less prone to choking the machine than some other hose-end models. I'd
give them a thumbs up.
